I hate when people characterize general support systems as "spoon feeding." It's called using that wealth for student success. Almost every Ivy has a fancy writing center, quantitative skills center, etc. Should they dismantle these to challenge students? Not everything needs to be these rigid bootstrap pulling exercises in elite education. I had a great old time at Columbia, but holy hell was it obnoxious dealing with narcissistic personalities who refused to help others for the grade and wanted to come off as the best when, in reality, you're just another undergrad with limited experience. It is okay to facilitate an environment where people work together. In fact, it should be encouraged. Luckily, institutions are making this change for the better. |
Went to a t5 university, and yeah...didn't even get anywhere near that level of research. Most people don't, not sure why people choose college based off of this very naive idea. |
It sounds like this poster needs to look at slacs or Wake Forest for the class sizes they want. |
OP if your kid’s grades sophomore year were poor enough that you can actually quantify how the “grades came back” this year, ask yourself if a truly top school is even in the cards for her.
Perhaps consider some lower-ranked schools that are known for their amenities, like Elon and Alabama. |
OP sounds like a whiner who just doesn’t want to foot the bill at a T20. She Can’t see the value beyond the decor or architecture of
An empty campus. So don’t OP. Elon and High Point are very very very pretty campuses with acceptance rates in the 50%s so your kid doesn’t have to strain their mental health to get in. There, answered it for you. |
Vandy/Rice/WashU track DI. And a few others. |
And Northwestern |
I haven’t visited UNC, however Grounds is impressive. The new buildings both inside and out are as impressive as the older buildings. And the Rotunda…well it’s a beauty from any view. To each their own. |
Why shouldn't people jump on you? You just took knee jerk inventory of individuals and entire student bodies with abandon.
Sounds like these schools are not a good fit for you. So, just move on. |
You seem to know it all, but, honestly, it's surface at best. You don't know what you don't know. And your arrogance is a turnoff to helping you. |
OP loses credibility when refusing to name the schools. Seems as though OP is afraid of any insights or information about these anonymous schools that might shed light on her concern. |
Np.
We’ve been touring as well. Have found most Ivies and SLACs to be the most run down. Duke, Northwestern, WashU and Vandy and Emory all looked beautiful. |
Thank you for speaking up. I agree. Pick for fit. It sounds as though OP’s kid did not like the T25s they toured. And there is nothing wrong with that, because there are so many outstanding colleges to choose from. OP, maybe look at LACs? Or maybe yours wants that big-campus feel more common with larger schools? It is ok that facilities matter to your kid. Let it be their choice! |
The T20 schools we toured were all beautiful:
Stanford Yale Rice Vanderbilt |
Actually, at HYP I *did* do research as an undergrad with an industry-defining person. Having said that, I was miserable in that lab and ran far away for grad school. |
