Algebra appeal after SOL results for Grade 6 ?

We received an email saying he would be placed in Algebra 1 H unless we sent an email asking for 7th H instead and gave us a week to respond. I am assuming that they sent a placement email to kids who missed the cut as well?

My kid made the cut for algebra 1 but we got no email. His course request page in SIS, however, was updated to reflect the Algebra 1 selection (the math placeholder was 7h until SOL results came out)

Yes, so that’s the email with a form to fill out which they will review and determine by August 9.

The school matters for this. Is it an AAP middle? If not, they need enough kids to make a class.

It’s an AAP middle.

My kid's middle school also is an AAP center middle school, but my kid needs to take an additional test to placement into Algebra I honor .

They don't "need" to take Algebra in 7th, but its appropriate for many to do so if they are ready for it.

Curious how you took Algebra in 9th then AP Calc in 12th... summer school? At least in my day the sequence was Alg -> Geo -> Alg II -> Trig/Pre-Calc -> AP Calc, so you had to at least get started with Algebra in 8th to hit AP Calc in 12th.

For me personally the advantage of Alg in 7th was that by time I got to college I had completed Calc (including MV) and was able to roll into LA/DE freshman year and not feel overwhelmed (frankly these were easier than MV Calc senior year). This also allowed me to realize early on that I did not want to go the pure math route and be a math major and thus I easily pivoted to a mathematical economics major by end of my 1st year. Had I not realized this until a year or two later and stayed on the math track, I would have had to make some pretty severe course adjustments and basically would have had no time for electives or study abroad experiences (which would have been a shame, those classes/experiences were very significant for me and my education). Or else just toughed it out with a major and several more classes that I didn't have any interest in taking, which would have been miserable. So very glad in retrospect I was able to progress in math at the pace I did.

He got an A- in Algebra in 7th and barely got B+ in Geometry in 8th, working incredibly hard and with a ton of stress, pushing hard for an A with the awareness that he probably couldn't swing it. Now he says he doesn't think he is great at math, even though it was always his easiest subject. If your kid was that far from the IAAT threshold, it's probably a bad idea to push Algebra in 7th. Not because of Algebra, but the classes further down the road.

It’s hard to tell. Depends on the kid.
DC got 84th percentile on the IAAT 586 on sol in 6th grade. Hardly ever studied during elementary. Also 84th percentile as result of not marking answers for questions DC had no time to answer.
Wrote to DC’s middle school and was assured at the beginning of the year DC would be assessed for fit which done and the class teacher promptly placed DC in algebra 1. Thanks to the encouragement in this forum and DC’s friends parents I appealed.
Now in 8th grade dc got a 600 in geometry and all As. Geometry was a breeze.

Great to know! Sucks to wait until August to know, though!

We did an Algebra appeal for my son. It was an online form. The school said that we should hear by tomorrow.

Lucky. Ours said August 9. Is yours a local school and not a center ?

I am the previous poster. Our middle school is a center.

That’s great that they will tell you that soon. We have to wait over a month.

Do you think still appeal despite the Iowa ? How do we do that? We will ask the teacher to appeal for him but I remember him saying kids should get 550 or higher. My child is super upset on his SOL despite having a good score because he was aiming for the 550…

Why would you appeal an SOL score when they don’t count for anything? What a waste of time.

Why respond to a thread you clearly know nothing about? What a waste of time.

The op isn’t asking about appealing SOL score. To get into Algebra I in 7th, the students needs to meet 2 criteria — 1) score over 91 on IAAT test and 2) score pass advanced on math SOL (SOL does count for something here).

OP’s child scored below the 91 threshold on IAAT but pass advanced on SOL so they’re asking for advice on appealing the decision that their child would take math 7h instead of algebra I.
