Can someone explain why kids need to take algebra in 7th? I took Algebra in 9th and AP Calculus in 12th and have a phD in mechanical engineering. Not sure what taking Algebra in 7th would have done to change my schooling and career path?
They don't "need" to take Algebra in 7th, but its appropriate for many to do so if they are ready for it. Curious how you took Algebra in 9th then AP Calc in 12th... summer school? At least in my day the sequence was Alg -> Geo -> Alg II -> Trig/Pre-Calc -> AP Calc, so you had to at least get started with Algebra in 8th to hit AP Calc in 12th. For me personally the advantage of Alg in 7th was that by time I got to college I had completed Calc (including MV) and was able to roll into LA/DE freshman year and not feel overwhelmed (frankly these were easier than MV Calc senior year). This also allowed me to realize early on that I did not want to go the pure math route and be a math major and thus I easily pivoted to a mathematical economics major by end of my 1st year. Had I not realized this until a year or two later and stayed on the math track, I would have had to make some pretty severe course adjustments and basically would have had no time for electives or study abroad experiences (which would have been a shame, those classes/experiences were very significant for me and my education). Or else just toughed it out with a major and several more classes that I didn't have any interest in taking, which would have been miserable. So very glad in retrospect I was able to progress in math at the pace I did.
