Algebra appeal after SOL results for Grade 6 ?

OP here. He just got very anxious over this one test because it’s all they talked about at school all year. He had very little sleep the night before and just panicked. I don’t know if he would apply for TJ or not. That’s not a goal at the moment. But I do know he would probably thrive in algebra as he does enjoy the math challenge. Class wise he always aces every test. For some reason the IOWA had him in panic.

Sounds like he should get his anxiety under control. Is he going for TJ or something?

The IAAT is the first timed test that requires quick work that most kids take. While a good number of parents on this sub forum have kids who have had math enrichment or participate in math competitions, the majority of 6th graders are not going to have had that experience. It is easy to see how kids would be caught off guard and not do well on this type of an exam. I would not call it anxiety.

OP: I would talk to your child about what they are interested in doing before appealing. Not fear mongering here but walk him through what it means to take Algebra in 7th grade. There will be regular quizzes and tests that are timed. There might be a good amount of homework, this is dependent on the school and the kid. DS completed 6th grade this year and rarely had homework. He had friends who missed a shared evening activity because they had homework. The homework was work not finished at school and the kid does have executive functioning issues.

If your child is interested in Algebra in 7th grade, then appeal. Maybe set aside some time during the summer to review concepts somehow so he feels comfortable when school starts.

Thanks so much. He has no issues in class. He in in 6th grade AAP and always has timed tests and aces them as well as a good amount of homework/assignments. I think the constant pressure and talk about the IAAT since day 1 or 6th grade freaked him out. They literally have a sign in his classroom that says “IOWA Passing Score: 91 and up!” So just the constant talk about it overstressed him. And you are right. Many did extra enrichment for this. He just did some practice stuff at home. I have no doubt he wouldn’t do great in Algebra. But he’s a kid and one day, he panicked. I sucked at standardized tests as a kid but did great academically in class… some of his classmates have aced these tests but still get 2s in their report card in various subjects… Every kid is different I guess!

When a kid’s friends are isosceles, Pythagoras, and scalene …. Well they don’t have friends

Kids are just smarter these days.
I used to think Sohcahtoa was an indian guide that helped lewis can clark explore the west.

Wondering if anyone has appealed the placement yet with their middle school, and if so, have you heard back yet with the decision?

I haven’t done yet. My child’s teacher said do it in end of June and also you don’t hear back until August when they basically update course schedules if the appeal worked.

My daughter's middle school will give a test about math 7 SOL and IAAT created by Fairfax County in July to decide whether place in Algebra 1 honors at math 7 after repeal.

Hundreds of FCPS students complete Algebra-2 by 8th grade, but only few get approved for Algebra 1 in 6th grade. This acceleration path needs to be streamlined.

Which school is this? Haven’t heard of this for my child’s school.

My child’s school has an appeal form to fill out. No additional test is given.

wow! it is so good without additional tst.

My child’s school also uses a form and no test. Wondering how successful other people were who went this route in the past.

Our middle school just sent out a form as well (am the OP.)

We received an email saying he would be placed in Algebra 1 H unless we sent an email asking for 7th H instead and gave us a week to respond. I am assuming that they sent a placement email to kids who missed the cut as well?
