Are you under the impression they were admitted on the merits?

I can’t see Jennifer Garner being sneaky like that. She seems like a very involved but down to earth mom with humble values(West Virginian) Will be interesting to see in two years where and if JLo’s twins will go to college

She wouldn’t have to be sneaky. I’m sure her daughter is bright but we know how hard it is to get into Yale. I’m sure Yale was aware of who her parents are and these schools obviously have an interest in admitting these celeb kids.

This. I'm sure Violet had a good application and she went to a HS that is a well known Ivy feeder. But there's no question her application goes in another pile from those if other highly qualified Harvard-Westlake grads. Schools know whose parents are well connected, wealthy, or can capture lots of positive media attention and those apps get flagged for special consideration.

Violet did not go to Harvard-Westlake and she is a national merit scholar.

Do you mean National Merit Semifinalist? Who cares, that hardly guarantees admission to Yale for the typical Marlborough girl.

Just pointing out that she is smart.

NP. Good for her! I don't follow celebs, but this pleases me.

As for those complaining about celebs getting a thumb on the scale, this is nothing new and doesn't affect your kid. The numbers are miniscule.

They buy their way into these colleges. Not new..

Their parents' fame is an asset to the college. There would be no need to buy their way in.

Yes, so few normals get in because they are not athletes, legacy, donor, full pay, or child of staff/faculty.

The funny thing is that most students are ALDC, yet we all think HYSP is taking the tippy top.

At my kid’s school, those who got into HYSP were legacy and full pay. Private schools that accept students with legacy parents have a leg up and then can take credit and say, “Our students got into HYSP.” But, really, the legacy aspect helped that more than anyone cares to say.

Of course, the students are smart and have good grades. But a lot of kids have same or better stats.

ALDC for the win.

My friend’s kid was accepted by T20 on her own merit (with hooks) and said she was shocked at how many of her classmates were not that smart and were there for legacy or athletic reasons. Meanwhile, she busted her rear to get there. She had a full pay / geographic hook though.

Full pay is not a hook. Everyone I know is full pay.

“Her own merit (with hooks)”? So…hooked, not purely on merit.

So, should the celeb hook not exist? I don't understand the complaining here.

I think Varsity Blues involved the private schools like USC and Stanford. However, Reese Witherspoon’s daughter and Julia Roberts twins all go to Berkeley.

Witherspoons daughter dropped out after 1 yr

Lol...my Pittsburgh-born husband and I agreed with you, and then we realized that OH and PA are literally connected...so there's that.

First of all, she goes to Marlborough, not Harvard. And she was a National Merit semifinalist. That being said, I’m sure the celebrity helps.

It isn’t the fame colleges want, it’s the potential donations.

My bad I thought she went to H-W. I see now she's a Marlborough grad. This honestly makes her Yale admittance likely even more dependent on her parents' fame. While H-W always has Yale admits Marlborough does not. No legacy status. No hook other than high test scores and grades... and being the kid of an A-list actor and director and his very famous and wealthy ex-wife.

Again I'm sure she's a very bright and accomplished young woman but there is no question that "Violet Affleck"'s application package goes in a special category separate from other very bright and accomplished applicants. It gets an extra look and there's a thumb on the scale.

This has been going on forever. Does anyone think Jodi Foster and Brooke Shields truly outshone other applicants? Celebs and their kids just need to meet minimums.

Jodie Foster? Absolutely. She was nominated for an Oscar at age 14 and was fully fluent in French after attending a French immersion school in LA. I think it is well known and discussed that she was a highly gifted child. Unless you think an Oscar nomination doesn’t really “count” as a national level award since it isn’t STEM related.

Jodi Foster was always known to be brilliant. Pretty sure Brooke Shields was too.
