lol. I think so many people on here are funny and smart. But, also plenty are mean or short sided. Or, perhaps it’s multiple sides. I haven’t been on in 3 weeks because I gave myself a time out.

I think for me it's a combination of wanting to feel connected somehow, wanting validation by someone else liking my comment, or wanting to buck someone up. Sometimes when I'm in a bad mood, I am snarky. I also like the idea that while we likely don't agree politically, we can help each find casual summer dresses.

Why do you dcum?

Internet forums are like participating in an ongoing interactive anthropological study in your downtime.

I agree. I have experience in market research plus I am Gen-X and the demos here are similar to or upmarket of mine. I don't live in DMV anymore. I stopped in last fall while helping my senior manage the college applications process because there are few high-powered parents in our school district and few people apply to selective schools. My kid will be attending school with some of your DMV kids this fall. I'm curious how high the bar is going to be for him.

I’m a sociologist and this website is one of the most poisonous I’ve come across. It’s worth studying.

I am learning about Americans and their thoughts they would never express publicly irl.

I came for the advice, stayed for the crazy.

I find it interesting and intriguing how anonymity allows people to be honest, but also mean, hateful, and judgmental. Even a simple question can turn nasty. I remember asking about cookies and got hate about being lazy. It’s very weird.

Some posts are nice and useful.

But if you average my long side with my short side, I'm normal.

I come here for advice. If I word the question the right way, I’ll often get all the best advice, particularly from all the Hermiones on the board who have already researched whatever I’m wondering about to the nth degree.

Reading: finding a useful travel/real estate/financially tip. Responding: to keep my writing sharp. I actually can't stand on the whining and adults not capable of saying, "no." Few people have real problems, which is a good thing.

It's one of the only true 'old skool' internet forums around that's still extremely active. Otherwise, everyone moved to reddit. I grew up with forums, I still love them. Reddit isn't the same.

Thanks for proving my point. People are just miserable here.

It’s an anthropological study of the upper middle class in the DCM. Very interesting and informative.

That and I can ask stupid questions I’m not asking someone IRL
