Engineering. Particular interest in Robotics

WPI. Avg gpa is higher, but I suspect they know privates tend to have lower GPA

This. Your high school matters.

But, even so, probably not OP.

It’s always about the high school.

I don’t think any of us can give you better information and it’s already posted here without more information on your HS snd what the naviance/Scoir data says….

Some of the suggestions on specific schools, here are probably the most realistic and a lot of them are probably reaches.

Please share weighted GPA, test scores, and level of rigor (number of APs. how many are rigorous (AP BC Calc) vs. not (AP capstone).

He's in a well known to the area private for academic rigor that does not have AP classes and GPA is unweighted. His math and stem courses are advanced/higher track and these are the classes he performs well (As). It is not for his courses he's less interested in, English, etc. If he didn't care at all, I can easily see him being an A & C student, but he does have high aspirations and unfortunately and obviously has a few Bs. I think he miscalculated where he needed to be for the colleges he wants. He absolutely has a rude awakening waiting for him, but this is life.

It is bravado.

Tell him you think he will do well, but insist his list reflect a range of selectivity. Show him the data, so he does not feel you are imposing your will.

That's what I thought, but he claims I dont know anything since "things are different now." I was hoping his college counselor would talk some sense into him but they just told him to make sure he has a backup option.

He’s right “things are different now”—it’s way harder to get in than it used to be.

Of those schools, Rochester, Tufts, and Case are d3 for sports. Assuming he wants to play in college, beat bet would be to contact the relevant coach and get a sense of whether they are interested in DC. If they are, they will likely get in ED.

Thank you! A lot of good options mentioned here.

Happy Mothers Day!

Set up a CollegeVine account for him and put in accurate data. The odds it gave us this year for DD were spot on. Should give him a good dose of reality!

DD had about a 3.6 unweighted and applied test optional. She was waitlisted at W&M and will be attending through Spring Pathway/semester in London if she doesn't get a call in the coming weeks. T20 apps would have been highly unreasonable for her. YMMV especially if he can get a high score.

NP. PP, do you mind my asking where else your DD applied and what her outcomes were? And is this from a private or public. Thanks!

Anonymous wrote:DC has a 3.6 and very high aspirations. I think he needs to look at Top 50 as his reaches but I'm told I don't know what I'm talking about. So just checking here out of curiosity to see if I'm really that off base. Can he get into a Top 20 with a 3.6?

For some examples/real stories:

What colleges did you low
GPA (<3.6) and high ACT/SAT (34/1500+) students get accepted to?

If he is in advanced classes then his unweighted doesn’t mean much. Recalculate GPA adding a point to every advanced class-this will give you an idea of how colleges that look at GPA will view your son. Meaning they will make their own GPA. Also ask the school how they will handle your son who is advanced in math vs students who have higher grades but didn’t take advanced classes. Good luck!

Some do, some don’t. You can estimate by adding .5 for honors course grades and adding 1 for AP, then recalculate the GPA.
