DC voted for this. And will continue to do so.

When is it enough for Bowser et al? I can't really believe that any of those people actually support "black lives" these days without any action to reduce crime.

BUT THEY PAINTED THE STREET!!

ā€œOn guardā€?

For what? What do you think you’ll be able to do? Nothing, that’s what.

Big hero complex loser

I’m not that poster but I was on a train recently and a group of very loud teens was near me. They started playing music with pretty nasty language really loudly. Then they started sort of whispering. I got up and moved to the other side of the train. I’m not avoiding all teens (I have three!) but teens that look like they don’t give a sh-t what adults think, I am avoiding.

Put another way, probably everyone who commits a serious crime on Metro evaded paying to fare to enter or leave. Plus, police will catch some people on outstanding warrants when they stop them for fare evasion.

To paraphrase the late Sen. Moynihan, DC needs to stop defining deviancy and disorder down.

That would require reverse legislation. Police can't just be instructed to take the gloves off whenever we get irked by the consequences of our policies. They follow the law .

I did not realize until I looked it up just now in response to seeing this post that fare evasion was decriminalized in DC. I wondered why there is constant turnstyle jumping now, and I hardly saw it at all my first 15 years of riding the metro here.

They have recently, beginning March 18, recriminalized fare evasion and authorized metro police to arrest fare evaders.

No. It is still decriminalized. From the link you posted:

ā€œThe emergency legislation, passed unanimously by the DC Council and signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser, includes a provision requiring anyone stopped for fare evasion to provide their true name and address, allowing police officers to issue civil citations.

"Before the Secure DC Bill passed, MTPD officers could engage an individual who did not pay the fare but were unable to compel compliance. Instead, officers could only ask an individual to leave the station or go back and pay their fare, severely limiting enforcement efforts. Under the new law, anyone who refuses to provide their true name and address may be arrested and face a fine of up to $100 for failing to comply.

"In November 2022, Metro launched a new safety initiative to crack down on fare evasion. The civil fine in the District is $50, and in Virginia and Maryland, fare evasion is a criminal violation punishable by up to a $100 fine. Metro is also in the process of modifying faregates at all 98 Metrorail stations with new saloon-style doors that make fare evasion more difficult."

Yes but the damage has been done, fare evasion has spread to general lawlessnes, can’t easily turn that back around. WMATA touts the new gates as reducing fare evasion by 70 percent but that was only at first. Now it’s a game: they vault thru the gap, or grab the door before it closes, or crowd in behind a farepayer, etc.

Black Lives Matter actually means Black Criminals Matter; it was actually pretty obvious because the people who invented the slogan also said they wanted no more police. It was never a movement that cared about black non-criminals.

Actually, it can turn around pretty quickly. These were high school (middle school?) kids. Already kids are recovering from the damage of 1-2 years of virtual/hybrid school (or no school). The current lawless kids will graduate (or stop going to school) and the kids who replace them will come of age in a time of increasing law enforcement rather than decreasing law enforcement. This is one of the few benefits of the criminals being juveniles. They will grow up and the new minors will come of age in a different world.

It will take a lot further action. If you want toothless, you should look into the "tickets" for public smoking of marijuana. So toothless the cops don't bother writing them, even though it's fairly simple to follow the cloud of pot to the Tenley Whole Foods garage stairwell -for example- and find a few (or many) folks engaged in petty lawlessness to cite. The approval of dispensaries near schools doesn't bode well that our Council wants to turn anything around. They dont seem on board for the coming of age in a different world thing you describe, unfortunately.

I am just now leaving the scene of the fatal shooting involving a minor at the Brookland Metro Station. I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim. This senseless act of violence is traumatizing for our community.

What is known so far is that there was a fight involving a group of juveniles on the platform. A juvenile not involved in the fighting fired shots into the altercation, striking and killing the victim. 2 MTPD Special Officers who were at the station jumped into action.

MPD is currently coordinating with MTPD. Chief Smith shared that there will be increased presence in the area as they are actively working to solve the case. If anyone has information about this case, they are asked to call 202-727-9099 or text the anonymous tip line at 50411.

I know this is unsettling for neighbors and will be sharing more steps I’ll be taking with community partners to address the trauma caused by gun violence. I will also be doing everything I can to ensure the person responsible for this senseless killing is brought to justice.

What is your PLAN to deal with this, dude? We don’t need to ā€œaddress the traumaā€ - we need to ARREST AND PROSECUTE CRIMINALS.

If they get tough on crime, it will disproportionately affect those of certain races. The council members therefore won't take steps in that direction.

ā€œFrankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.ā€ So over this woke sh$& by now.

Yet you still vote democrat. Go figure.

I vote democrat because republicans are even more stupid. This is a party that actually chose Donald Trump to be their representative, and are proud of that choice.

Local elections are different. They are mainly about land use, crime, taxes, and schools. DC is limited in what laws they can pass without congressional approval anyway. A couple Republicans elected in DC would beneficial at this point if helps to roll back the crazy soft on crime policies.

Why are we talking about fare evasion if these are middle school students? Don’t they get free Metro? (Which I support, I just don’t understand the conversation here.)
