Can police be instructed to take the gloves off on fare evasion? A lot of fare evaders are criminals. Put another way, probably everyone who commits a serious crime on Metro evaded paying to fare to enter or leave. Plus, police will catch some people on outstanding warrants when they stop them for fare evasion.

To paraphrase the late Sen. Moynihan, DC needs to stop defining deviancy and disorder down.

That would require reverse legislation. Police can't just be instructed to take the gloves off whenever we get irked by the consequences of our policies. They follow the law .

The Council enables these murders. It was easy to see this would happen.

I did not realize until I looked it up just now in response to seeing this post that fare evasion was decriminalized in DC. I wondered why there is constant turnstyle jumping now, and I hardly saw it at all my first 15 years of riding the metro here.

Quick! We need more conflict intervention and wrap around services for the misunderstood “child” who killed the victim!

Station was full of kids. Miracle no one else was hit.

If you Google, there has been a recent change to the law re: fare evasion in DC and some very recent initiatives.

Occasionally criminals are so dumb that they do swipe job issued card, commit crimes and then can be tracked. But, typically smarter than that and antisocial enough to not pay.

We aren't even safe at the metro stations.

Wow he didn’t even wear a mask. What an idiot.

Presumably whoever he was trying to execute went into the metro thinking no one would try to shoot him in a crowded space with a million cameras, all but guaranteeing himself a life in prison. But the victim clearly underestimated the stupidity of his enemies.
