Huge FCPS HS, no girls on football teams or wrestling teams.
I have two boys and have never heard of any of their friends playing volleyball but have heard over a hundred try out for soccer teams. |
Its unfortunate that there aren't more intramural opportunities for the popular sports lots of kids want to participate in (basketball, soccer, etc.) They are so limited on gym and field space, though.
I don't know if precious rare gym space should be taken up by a sport so few are interested in, but maybe having it as a varsity sport will make it more popular (in which case, the boys who now play in rec leagues will probably be shut out athletically as pp mentioned). |
What circles are those? We live in a middle class area of Fairfax and none of my kids ever had friends who played boys volleyball. Its just not a thing here. |
Really! Assume they don't wear the skirts ![]() |
Woodson, Langley, South County, Annandale, and Robinson all have boys volleyball clubs with both varsity and JV teams. It is a thing. |
Interesting. We live in Centreville and don't know any boys who have ever played volleyball. |
lol all the people saying they should have added X sport for girls or boys instead of volleyball or wrestling. Did a single one of you advocate for that in your community and with the School Board? Adding boys volleyball and girls wrestling has been years in the making, and mentioned in dozens of Board newsletters and in Board meetings. It’s a shame you didn’t bother to weigh in when you had the chance. But wait - you can still advocate for any of the sports you’ve suggested! But I’m guessing zero will. It’s easier just to complain after the fact. |
Must be a real niche thing, as we live in Burke and don't know any boys who have ever played on boys volleyball teams. Its not a sport offered by our rec league.
I think kickball or rugby or flag football would be more popular. |
Its as surprising to many as adding boys field hockey or girls tackle football would be. Girls don't participate in wrestling at all in most FCPS high schools and almost no one knows any boys who play volleyball. It seems boys volleyball must have had some strong advocacy among the few who play it. |
I don't care how many sports they add, but our school already is so low on gym space. The school board needs to reserve space at community centers or somewhere for these additional sports they are adding. Our school is out of room. |
Agree. We don't have the nice, spacious facilities other schools do. We have one gym, no auxiliary gym. No room for more sports. |
I'm surprised that folks think you can have both boys and girls basketball in the same season but can't have both boys and girls volleyball in the same season because of gym space. |
Why are you surprised by that? As pp mentioned, in addition to two girls volleyball teams, there are 6 basketball teams that use the gym in fall for pre-season green days, as well as other activities. Some of the crappier schools only have one gym. |
Um, its a whole extra team needing practice and game space when the gym space is maxed out. What's surprising? |
To all the folks who don’t know any boys that play volleyball or girls that wrestle - I don’t know any of the kids on my HS golf teams. boys basketball teams, boys tennis team. Color guard, marching band, girls volleyball, field hockey or boys or girls swim teams. But I believe these should exist even though I don’t knew anyone personally one those teams. Surely you have heard of boys volleyball, even if you don’t know a player? Ok then. Sports can exist at a high school level even when you don’t personally know someone who plays. |
