What season is boys volleyball?

Being from the west Coast it's so weird to be to see people thinking of it as a girls' only sport...I have a sister who lives in the Norfolk area whose sons play volleyball in high school, too, not so far away. Also the more sports the better - give kids options to exercise and be part of teams.

Only true if there is space. 12 boys volleyball players is a drop on the bucket for giving kids exercise options at a
3000 kid high school.

The addition of boys volleyball and girls wrestling was proposed in Reid’s budget. The same budget that asks for 10% more from the county than last year and the largest amount ever. It’s an irresponsible idea that came out of a small group of boys volleyball players and their parents badgering Reid, school board members and anyone else they could find. No one asked for girls wrestling in any of the public comments. Last year Reid said she was expanding middle school sports but then this proposal came out instead. I assume it will get cut when the final budget is adopted.

Two of my nephews in Richmond played volleyball in HS down there. They are as typical boy as you can get. Everyone down there thinks of it as a sport for boys and girls. I think it’s a great option for kids who are athletic but never went all in on one sport. It’s one of the few kids can pick up later and still make a HS team because everyone isn’t starting it at age 5.

There is one girl who plays football and one who wrestles (different girls) at our high school. That doesn’t seem like a good ratio to claim the sport is coed.

Middle school sports have expanded. Cross country and track as the only recognized sports now, but other teams seem to be forming and playing other middle schools more widely in years past. This is the first year my kids' school is offering girls basketball

Boys volleyball is one of the fastest growing sports in the US.

In my area it is a spring sport for boys - girls is fall. There was less conflict for gym space then (girls was already an established sport) and they use the same equipment and gym.

My DS’s school can only support a JV and varsity team (no freshman) and there are cuts every year since it started. Probably about half the kids who try out don’t make it - it has become that competitive.

The local tournaments that host both boys and girls volleyball used to have about 2 girls to every 1 boys teams register. Now it is close to even. That is just within the past 5 years.

It is also a great sport after high school in our area - many opportunities to join pick up games at the PAL etc. much more so than any other sport by us.

Don’t knock it until you have seen some high level games.

The girls wrestling is bizarre.

On the first page someone posted the Virginia High School League volleyball page, which clearly says boys' volleyball is in the fall.

Men/Boys volleyball is super fun to watch. My son (a senior) played for a couple of years with our FCPS HS club team and also played for part of year with a local club team. It's a great fit for boys who might like to play on team but don't want a contact sport. Of course, being tall is also a bonus. It's popular in other parts of the country. If you think your son might be interested, take him to a local college game. George Mason has a great team.

I think this could become quite competitive and popular around here now that it will be in high schools. There aren't a lot of options for HS fall sports for boys.

I graduated from FCPS in 2003 and my junior year there was a big push for girls volleyball and alot of schools got teams. Our coach didnt really know how to play, but I really loved it and wish I had started younger.

Great that volleyball will be offered, but I hope the smaller schools like Mt Vernon would be able to field teams.

It is strange that the VHSL does not support high school water polo teams. It’s a huge sport in many states.

maybe because they don't have pools.

MCPS has both boys and coed volleyball. Their season is in the spring (girls vball is fall). I have male adult friends in Fairfax who play in volleyball leagues. It is cracking me up that others can’t believe boys/men’s volleyball is a thing!

I think its strange to approve sports without making sure there is space for them to practice and play. So many of the schools are overcrowded.

agree that the girls wrestling is incredibly strange
