You applied to 20 schools? WHY

Not PP but Virginia state schools were free to apply to the third week in October so my son applied to all of them except for the black ones.

The proper term is HCBU.

Only in at Ohio Case Western which offered a lot of scholarship money. Couldn't be less enthusiastic about going to Ohio.

When my DD applied couple years ago she got a couple early acceptances to safeties but held out for an RD from a college that doesn’t announce until March 31- which is very very late for college decisions. When everyone was announcing where they were going in March that year my DD was still in the hoping and praying stage. It worked out for her in the end. Just stick with your timeline OP, keep an eye on Your Kids decision dates and no one else’s, tell your kid what to expect between now and April meaning other kids will celebrate around them and that’s fine.

Anonymous wrote:I feel you OP. Prior recent year, mine struck out in ED, but at the end of RD had 4 offers, three with merit, 5 WL, three of which came through, and one of those with merit, which was surprising (and happily accepted). So in the end 7 great private schools to choose from and really liked all of them.

Hang in there.

Do think this is a typical number of admits? My son applied to 19. Already in at safety at bottom of list. Worried that could end up with just bottom 2 safeties and a bunch of wait lists in the RD round for targets, which would not be a happy outcome.

Have you visited? What is your kid's intended major/area of interest?

It is an amazing school and we were pleasantly shocked at how much we liked it. Unfortunately, my kid liked another school better (similarly located in an area you'd go---"seriously you want to spend 4 years there?!?!") and it was an overall better fit for my kid. But case was their 2nd choice. Had money been an issue, they'd be at case with their amazing scholarship as well (well over 50% of tuition)

Thank you pp and congratulations to the pps whose kids have some under their belt. I’m sorry my post brought some of the nasties out!

Why do you care?

Because I have a junior and I'm still learning the process. A lot has changed since I applied 30 years ago. It's not a dumb question at all. Some of you are nasty for obsoletely no reason.

You applied to 20 schools? WHY

There is a very recent DCUM thread on applying to more than 20 schools.

Anonymous wrote:Just curious. My kid did restrictive early action (not an Ivy) and there was only one other school he liked/applied to that was public EA (but they don't announce until February). It was definitely the right strategy for him. He applied to 17 schools with a good mix of (safety, target and reach). They all only had ED, or EDI/EDII and his top choices weren't any that offered EDII.

It just feels weird to hear everyone talking about all these acceptances and he literally has no clue. He could care less though. He is a 35ACT/4.0uw/4.4w at a private so he will get in somewhere, but it feels really weird to not know until mid-late March.

Try not to worry. Mine was in similar situation 2 years ago. SCEA early w/ no joy and nothing in hand until late Jan. Only had 1 other safety in early March. Then, late March it all rolled it. Stressful waiting, but happily overwhelmed in the end. Just help him keep his focus on the day-to-day.
Good luck!

Consensus was?

To me it makes sense to apply to maybe 3 safeties, 3 targets, and then a large number of sub-10% admissions reaches, just trying to win the lottery.

This is our strategy. Though deferred at one of the safeties and it leaves a bad taste so I feel like it might be off the list even if she does get in. In at another safety that she will go to if nothing else pans out. So far rejection from ED, 2 deferrals and 1 acceptance. 13 more to go…

This is the strategy we’re betting on. We’ll see. First semester grades that will go out on the mid-year report for the schools requesting one are locked down.

20 apps here. This is what we did.

In 3 places (safeties).
Deferred 3 places (reaches).

Waiting for 14 more. 10 of them are lottery for sure. Wishing we did more lottery after hearing where else kids from our school applied - ideally applying to private universities where few others are applying yields better results.
