MCPS Summer School

We had assumed it would be offered virtually, should we now plan for that not being an option? Lastly, how do we apply for reduced cost? I’m a teacher (single mom) so summer income is a factor for us.
Thanks to anyone who can answer!

Last year, registration opened on April 12th. I would look for the website to be updated with the relevant info sometime in March.

At the BOE today, the tentative timeline had a community update with info being sent out in February, and then registration beginning in March.

To clarify there is no virtual option for Health A and priority is given to those graduating in 2025?

They’ve had online Health A in past years, so there’s no reason to think they won’t this year.

And I think the priority for 2025 is only for Health B—that’s the implication of the email we got.

Does anyone know offhand whether the summer school proposals outlined by a PP were approved yesterday? I thought it might be in the Thursday bulletin, but I didn't see anything about it.

They approved the proposed tuition rates, but they deferred acting on the rest of the plan because some board members weren't happy with the three in-person high school locations listed. I believe they said they will look at revising the site list and bring it back to the board for approval soon.

Got it, thanks. Mine is a 2025 kid, trying to fit Health B online between summer jobs. Was hoping they might have at least approved the dates!

FWIW, no one had voiced complaints about the dates, so they seem likely to stay as is.

What does this mean? If you don't do it in the summer, kids miss out on taking classes they want, like music, arts, dance, photography, computer science. Being a kid means exploring your interests. And, it makes for a better day to have a break and do something you enjoy. Summer is the way to go. Do Health A, before 9th, after 9th, and health b after 9th.

Thank you for the dates - will this be in person or virtual? Where can we find info about this - sorry, we are new to MCPS for next year. Thanks for any and all help.

^update it the day before Spring break starts. Which means this year March 22. They don't like parents calling the schools to inquire about classes being offered at the school, at least that is what people have told us.

Does anyone know what happens if you are out sick for a week of summer school? Do they fail you or can you make up the work before the end of the term?

Kids have to take these required classes over the summer precisely so they can take the courses they want while they are still in HS!
