MCPS Summer School

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/extendedhours/summerschool/. Would it be allowed for a child to take extra courses or take a prerequesite for a course through this? Also it says registration is closed so dose anyone know when it opens?

While I understand that it is typical to start thinking of summer plans in January, MCPS usually does not post summer school information until March. Patience required

Wow sounds like mcps is responding. It is hard when many camps, jobs and opportunities require commitments and planning early in year. Mcps announces late and doesn’t confirm until the last minute.

Summer school courses are released later per previous poster. Online you can take some (but not all) for new credit. They can also meet pre-requisites.

Be warned, last summer my DD took one for a pre-requisite which her counselor signed off on for this purpose. Then when she tried to change her course schedule at her home school to the next course the counselor essentially told her “the content of the online summer school class only overlaps about 90% with the class at our MCPS HS so you actually can’t use it as the pre require and need to retake the course during the school year”.

It was immensely frustrating to say the least.

It would be very helpful if mcps would post the dates of session I and II.

If the class says available for original credit you can take it as a prerequisite or as an extra course.

If class says grade replacement/improvement you can only take it if you have already taken it.

I’d also note you will only know if you got into each semester of the class a day or two (at best) before the class starts so be prepared to wait patiently.

In our experience it doesn’t seem designed to be user friendly.

It’s really not acceptable how it’s handled.

A lot of high schools also hold their own summer schools which I definitely recommend. The classes are in person with the teachers from the schools that are often taught with a lot more fidelity.

At least at our HS in person summer school is only allowed for grade replacement.

It depends on the school. My child did in person honors geometry for original credit and was well prepared for honors algebra 2 this year.

It surprises me that it varies between schools whether they offer in person summer school for new credit. Not saying it isn’t true, but you’d assume this was mandated at the county level to provide more equitable access.

Is it reasonable to assume that the session dates will be close to the same as last year?

There is no equity.

I expect so. I think they try to end before fall sports tryouts which I think are scheduled to start August 14 this year.

I can’t guarantee that, but it seems to be the pattern.
