MCPS Summer School

It's about the challenge in hiring teachers for the summer.

What do we know (if anything) about there being a cost this summmer?

I think they said at one of the board meetings that they would be returning to the pre-pandemic practice of charging for summer classes.

Does anyone know how much that is per class?

When they hold their own those are fundraisers for the principal.

In 2018, it was $300 per semester class.

I expect so. I think they try to end before fall sports tryouts which I think are scheduled to start August 14 this year.

I can’t guarantee that, but it seems to be the pattern.

Where did you see the &/14 date for sports tryouts? It was 8/10 last year. Would be really helpful for family vacation if it was later. Really hate how McPS won’t announce dates in a way that allows you to book vacations.

If it benefits both the students and the home school, I'm okay with that! I didn't realize that it will now be $300 per semester- that might make me reconsider.

Dates are school and sports specific. During my kids’ years in HS they always started no earlier than the second Wednesday on August and no later than the Saturday thereafter. Some sports have week long tryouts while some are 2 or 3 days. Ask your AD - I’m sure they know next year’s dates.

Someone from our school sent them. I think the following year is Aug 13, 2025. They seem to set the statewide dates pretty early, I think three years out?

You AD should be able to confirm.

So we need to check with someone at our kid's school that the course taken over the summer can count as original credit?

In our experience it doesn’t seem designed to be user friendly.

It’s really not acceptable how it’s handled.

Your child’s counselor will have to sign off on the summer school request so you can just let them know and confirm at that time.

Because peope booking vacation is really top of mind for the school district this size. It’s usually around 2 weeks before school starts. So assume the week of 8/12 for now and ask the AD at your school.

Here's a memo from McKnight to the board about summer school which will be discussed and voted on at the Thursday 1/11 meeting.

Highlights:

The 2024 proposed sites for regional high schools are:
• Montgomery Blair
• Richard Montgomery
• Seneca Valley

Sessions are tentatively scheduled:
• Session 1: June 24–July 12, 2024
• Session 2: July 16–August 2, 2024

Proposed full tuition is $350, but there are reduced options. This is for central and regional programs. Individual HS summer programs may have different tuition.

Honors Health B Prioritization and Availability
Students in the class of 2025 will have a two-week priority registration window for the Health B course.
Students who register for the Health B course during registration window are guaranteed a spot.
Health B will be:

● offered free of charge to students in the class of 2025, as this graduation requirement has not
been available during any of the free summer programs since 2020.
● offered in both session 1 and 2.
