Learn to read before posting. This has nothing to do with Barbara Comstock. And at least spell her name right

+1. And learn not to believe anything in The Patch.

The patch isn’t believable.

Meant that was a question. Why isn’t it believable?

Honestly, I don’t think the vast majority of Reston would be affected all by the proposed casino. But there are some homeowners who would be affected. I’d hate to have purchased one of those new EYA townhomes next to Wiehle-Reston metro, only to have a casino complex built right next door.

For the majority of Reston residents, think the more relevant concern is the lost opportunity for alternative development (mixed use, etc.) at that location.

The company Comstock is no relation to the failed politician Comstock.

This is correct. Comstock, the developers, have hired lobbyists and it’s become a political fight to get this casino in place. The locals do not want it.

Yes, and where there are lobbyists there is money. People don’t want it but once you get a few elected officials on board it becomes reality. The one drawback of representative government is you just have to “buy” a few people to get the job done.

We will vote them out. See pp about the track record of VA voters keeping riff-raff (Disney, etc) out of the area.

If we had Disney America, there wouldn't be a need for a casino.

There is not a "need" for a casino now. Portsmouth VA has one, because they actually need the money. National Harbor has one because DC actually needs the money.

Everyone says NoVa is booming, but needing a casino tells me they are lying and it's actually going downhill.

No, we don't need a casino. Only Comstock is saying this. We also didn't need Disney. PP probably works for Comstock.

Anonymous wrote:If it ends up being a large complex kind of like Maryland Live!, which is near Arundel Mills, it might not be that bad. That venue has performance spaces, and some pretty good acts come through there. I’ve even been to a recording of one of my favorite podcasts, which was fun. I’ve never been around there at night, but it seems like it’s just there’s shopping, a few restaurants, and a casino, and it’s just a busy area with things to do.

MGM National Harbor is actually really lovely. I go to Voltaggio for special occasions, and saw Cher at the performance space. But I don’t think Reston would get anything that “high end” because the surrounding area isn’t as destination-like as National Harbor.

But it sounds so depressing and trashy to me to think that when my kids are teens in the future, they’ll want to go to concerts with their friends, go shopping, go out for meals……”over by the casino”. Like it’ll be normalized to them and they’ll associate casinos with a nice thing to do. Just so gross and tacky and not “family-friendly” at all.

More communities are uniting to try to fight this. Tysons, Vienna, etc. Don’t want this in Fairfax County.

There is already too much gambling. All the ads about the Sports Gambling apps - think of all those poor people losing money all the time. My son is always asking me to let him bet like his friends do. Such a bad idea to deregulate gambling and an even worse idea to bring casinos to Fairfax County.

Gambling is a tax on the mathematically illiterate. As is the lottery.

Lottery tickets should at least come with a Wonka bar.

One could also say driving is for the mathematically illiterate.

Dave Marsden is a total piece of shit and a tool of the gambling industry.

Well, unless this gets some attention by residents who oppose this soon, it will happen. Now Tysons is more likely.
