I truly have mixed feelings about people who believe they are engaged in political speech getting fired or other big consequences. But OTOH I am glad that casual antisemitism is being stood up to. There’s a difference between what Sarandon said and a naive college student going to a march and chanting along to “From the river to the sea.”
At the end of the day, I do believe if you’re going to take a stand publicly on the side of a nation or ethnicity, you bear the responsibility for what happens when you piss off “the other side” through uniformed or deliberately offensive speech. |
So Melissa Barrera was fired from the Scream franchise for: “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,” a Spyglass spokesperson tells Variety. Do you think her posts qualify as hate speech or antisemitism? I do not. It can certainly be argued that Israel's actions meet the definition of genocide and ethnic cleansing, although you may disagree with that opinion. |
What did she post?
Do Jews control the media? Is that an accurate statement or just garden variety antisemitism? |
She didn’t say Jews control the media. She said western media only shows one side. That is her opinion, but not antisemitism. |
Same for the other side. I wish none of them thought we wanted to hear their opinions and political views |
You need to consider the degree to which you value your employment. You can express your views. Your employers can express theirs by keeping you or not. |
| I'm not J but the Hamas attack had made me a confirmed Islamophobic. Because of the distinct lack of cries and condemnation of Hamas atrocities from Muslims worldwide. Who even started protesting before any Israeli retaliation. Where are the Muslim leaders calling for Hamas to go for raping and torturing people? The one thing I've definitely learned from all this is that Islam is most definitely not a religion of peace. Which makes sense given the spread of Islam to that part of the world was not peaceful but by violent conquests. |
She might as well have said it. Being coy doesn't mean you aren't antisemitic. And the Western media has shown the Palestinian side. |
"Islam is a religion of peace" has to be one of the most ridiculous marketing gimmicks of all time. How anyone could believe that crap is beyond me. |
Agree |
Eventually there become too many people to "make an example" of. We may already be at the point. Ruling through fear has its limits. |
She is smart and brave? She is an actress that simply reads lines that are written for her to speak, that is her job. I have zero respect for her and have no interest in any stupid thing she has to say. The pro Israel crowd is correct, and I am with them! |
These terms are being weaponized, cruelly, against Jews who were the subjects of ethnic cleansing and genocide - the systematic eradication of 5 million of them in WWII and prior (ethnic cleansing and systematic killing of Jews goes way back, unfortunately). I’m grateful that people are being called out for this. |
No doubt that the Jewish people have been victims of genocide. That does not preclude Israel from committing a genocide. Many people view what is happening in Gaza as genocide and ethnic cleansing, meeting the definitions of both. It is not your view, I understand. But it is not antisemitism to view it as genocide. |
It is antisemitism and the term genocide is hyperbole. |
