Some stores are doing away with self checkouts

Yeah I love when they put a “limit” on self check but then have literally NO cashier lanes open at all!

The limit isn't enforced.

As for me, I steal about 15% when I am forced to use slef scan. They will pay me for the work one way

Because customers don't scan ALL the items in their cart. Duh.

DP here, I get that but the cart and receipt are checked by the checker when you leave. And self checkout receipt paper is different at Costco so they know you went through the self scan lanes. Should be easy for the receipt checkers to give those carts a little extra attention especially if the item limit is enforced.

Wow that’s nuts. I hope you are kidding.

I love self checking. I pretend that I am my teenage self back to my grocery store days. Back then, some customers refused to bag their groceries. I find that’s really a georgraphic based thing. I lived in a bag your own groceries area. Anyway, all of you people complaining about “working” remind me of that.

Umm, EVERY store does this. You just may not notice

The Costco I go to has employees who do most of the scanning at the self checkout so there's a shorter wait than the other lines but I have help if needed. It's great.

Another Costco I go to sometimes has employees checking customer IDs at self checkout to make sure the membership card matches the person presenting it, but they don't help you scan. I guess they've had trouble with people sharing memberships?

How appropriate that this comment follows one bragging about using self-checkout to steal from the store.

My only beef with self-checkout is when I have a huge shopping trip where it would be quicker and more efficient to check out with a belt and checker and they are not staffed to accommodate it (usually Wegmans or Target, where I'm doing a grocery shop combined with home items). The self-checkout lines are then interminably long and it's much harder to manage a huge cart full of stuff at self-checkout.

People can steal using the register scanner too. Duh. Withholding the scan gun doesn’t change that.

At my Costco it is if they are busy. An employe stands in front of the self checkout registers and directs fuller carts to a full service line.

I don’t like self checkouts. They always malfunction.

I despise them at Costco, because the self checkout lines block the aisles and make traffic so much worse.

I feel the same.

I also really hate having to interact with people face to face. My kids all agree with me.

Why aren’t you masking like you are supposed to?

The issue is that they did not disclose that they were doing so in advance. WF now has palm scanning too to pay. Just a little too big brotherish imo.

My local grocery store has a very sensitive bagging area or something, so any slight movement like adjusting my bag to make room for other items or opening another empty bag will give me "Unexpected item in bagging area" error. It's happening to many self checkout lanes and I see "waiting for assistance" lights blinking everywhere and so annoying.

I started only using self checkout at Costco because I was getting stopped at the door for unscanned items when I let their staff ring me up.
