Do other sports have freshman teams or just football?

There’s no way that’s the reason they don’t have freshman soccer. Sounds like you just want to stir the pot for whatever reason. I don’t have highschoolers yet, but the only issues I have heard about at sporting events were football games.

Fans are a problem at football games. The participants have been the problem at soccer games.

They should cut freshman football. The amount of interest gets lower and lower every year.

They cannot get refs and coaches to do it. What the schools offer to pay coaches does not come close to the pay that they can make by coaching travel in the area. The coaches that would take that job would basically be donating their time to the school system.

It is widely known that there is a soccer ref shortage and that the state is cracking down on the high school game in particular. They are not motivated to add more.

How many FCPS schools have freshmen field hockey?

At least you get a JV team. My kids play tennis. We only get one varsity tennis team. That leaves like 2-3 spots for freshmen.

The main answer, is that there are not enough fields for most sports to have a freshman team.

Ok but why do some sports get them but not others? I’m sorry but it’s a joke for girls to have freshman field hockey while it’s can’t have freshman soccer. Girls can literally decide to try the sport for the first time in 9th grade and make the team. While boys who have played high level soccer for years have to try out for JV and hope they can somehow stand out among 100+ boys most of whom are older and bigger.

And I agree about football. Girls end up having so many more options for teams to join because the total number of participants has to be equal to boys. Football eats up a huge percentage of spots on the boys side. There is nothing equivalent on the girls side. Title IX should be total number of teams, not number of athletes.

There are no title 9 equivalents for HS sports. That is a collegiate scholarship rule. High Schools are mindful of facility upgrades they are making to ensure men’s and women’s teams are treated similarly, but there is no law or rule that mandates they have the same number of participants.
The biggest issue is field space in the spring which is when the VHSL plays soccer. There are already 4 soccer teams, 4 lacrosse teams and a men’s and women’s track team that utilize the rectangular stadium fields. Adding two more freshman teams would make it difficult for some schools to find game and practice time. Also is difficult to find coaches who want to do freshman sports. Football, field hockey, and volleyball all struggle to find capable and professional individuals to coach and supervise these students, which will ultimately lead to their demise. It is more likely there are no freshman sports in the future than it being expanded sadly.

You are incorrect. Title IX absolutely applies to high school sports. They are obligated to provide equal opportunities to boys and girls. The problem is there is often not an equal demand. Which results in fewer spots for boys relative to the number who would like to participate.

Above poster is correct. Schools are not required to count roster spots for HS sports. They simply have to offer a similar amount of activities to both males and females. In college they are required to have a similar amount of scholarships.

1. Girls play soccer, too. It's not a boy sport. Let's not
2. You have DOZENS of private teams that your kid can play soccer on. There are far fewer club options for the sports that have JV teams.
3. Shut up about boys and inequity loser #boymom. Your boy isn't doing well because of your parenting not because girls have more advantages.
