Why is there no Freshman soccer in FCPS?

It’s such a popular sport and should get its own Freshman team. They could easily field teams at most high schools, whereas they have to beg for Freshman football players.

Do other sports have freshman teams or just football?

I thought the reason for freshman football was to introduce kids to the sport. I'm not sure why though. It is the most attended sport by the student population.

Football positions are complicated. Soccer positions are generally understood by age seven or eight.

Depends on what you mean by “understand”, but ok. Regardless, the argument that freshman football is needed in order to introduce kids to the sport doesn’t really hold water. Local rec leagues offer tackle football starting in elementary school. Never mind the popularity of flag football. Younger kids can and do pick up an understanding of the positions and the plays.

I think as tackle football becomes less popular you’re going to see more resentment about the amount of resources it takes up. Other boys’ sports suffer at the expense of football because of the number of roster spots it eats up.

They need to add freshman baseball before freshman soccer.

50 plus talented freshmen get cut from baseball each year, far more than for soccer.

I think our HS has had about 120 kids come out for 40 spots available between JV and Varsity soccer...

No they aren't. They are easier. You just do one thing. My kid did VYI football and had to do the same thing every play of every game. So boring.

I think they are about the same level of competition at our high school. But, yes, if our high school had freshman, JV, and varsity baseball there would still be dozens of kids with years of playing experience not playing and/or cut from the team.

I am curious too- we have freshman field hockey, volleyball, football, basketball- but no soccer. seems odd.

Maybe it’s related to space? We only have varsity tennis because there just aren’t enough courts to have more than a varsity team. Perhaps soccer is similar? Just not enough field space for boy and girls to all have F/JV/V.

Not enough field space.

What HS more kids at baseball tryouts than at soccer tryouts? Our boys soccer has 140 boys trying out for jv/varsity and 150 for basketball.

Field space. There isn’t the space for all of the practices and then the games. You have boys and girls soccer and lax already in the spring. JV and varsity for each is 8 teams.

In the fall there is football (3 teams) and field hockey (3 teams). Am I missing any that use the field?

Seems like there is some space in the fall for teams still.
