Those are Basis’ demographics which are waaaay skewed white. |
| This forum never ceases to amaze me that people will find the most contorted reasons to say they wouldn’t attend Banneker rather than celebrate not only one of the best schools in DC, but the DMV and country as a whole - said proudly as the parent of a current Banneker parent. |
What? Have you ever set foot in this building? That is definitely not the vibe I experience. The vibe I experience, and love, is predominantly one of Black Excellence. Other races and cultures, too, but it feels like what I imagine an HBCU would feel like. |
Any urban kid might not feel comfortable in any school where more than 80% of students belong to a single race. The lack of racial diversity at Banneker in a real drag. If DCPS wants Banneker to diversify, system leaders could make that happen. DCPS could start by making sure that more photos of white and Asian students appear on the Banneker web site and marketing materials. Banneker could also ditch some of the rules that tend to turn off UMC parents. The school could focus on raising Banneker's comparatively weak standardized test scores, offering more serious STEM and language classes and expanding and strengthening EC offerings. |
Your demographic data is out of date. |
|
Yes, but not by much. 70% black, 5% white, 2% Asian. A drag.

There’s a long history on DCUM (back to at least 2012) of people like you complaining that Banneker is 100% Black and 0% white, and concluding that that will never change. A few years later (2019), Banneker is 80% Black and 2% white, and you all proclaim that that will never change. Now Banneker is 70% Black, 5% white, and you’re still saying DCPS has to “start” to diversify the school, as if that process is still only a hypothetical future development. You just keep moving the goal posts. And I have no doubt that you’ll still be here in 5 years, moving them again. |
You're kidding! There aren't enough excellent majority-white spaces--we need to make an excellent majority-Black space more diverse??? |
|
I don't believe in racial segregation in any form in this country. Don't like the idea of historically white or black institutions. Perhaps we can disagree on this point without being disagreeable.
|
So you need someone to hold your hand for your kid to attend Banneker? Maybe you should talk to the Black families that attend Walls. I'm sure they can counsel you on the trauma you may encounter. Matter of fact, a few Asian families can assist you. Since you always pull them in to make you feel better about your racial fears and slights. |
Agree! As the parent of a white freshman at Banneker, there is no need to change marketing materials! What’s wrong with seeing Black students? It is odd to me that this is seen as a negative. I don’t care that there aren’t more white students nor does my kid. What rules do UMC parents object to? More serious classes?! You clearly know nothing about Banneker. |

My DD is horrified at rule barring the wearing of sweatpants

Kids can’t wear sweatpants at Banneker? |
They can. They do. Mine does, all the time. |
