Plenty of non-white kids at Basis.

In comparison to the rest of the city including charter schools? WTF are you talking about? 46.4% White, 25.8% Black, 7.2% Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, 9.9% Hispanic/Latino, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.

WTF are you talking about? That means the *majority* of BASIS kids aren’t white. So there are obviously a *ton* of BASIS kids who could go to Banneker and still not be white. 25% Black may vastly underepresent the city, but it still means that 1 out of 4 kids at BASIS is Black, which (1) is hardly a negligible percentage and (2) means it’s not that weird for those 1/4 of all BASIS students to be thinking of Banneker.

Hey WTF/WTF! Basis is FAAAAAR whiter than it should be in terms of DC Demographics: check out what is "normal" for DC

Category SY 22-23
% Student Population Black 56%
% Student Population Hispanic 22%
% Student Population Asian 2%
% Student Population Two or More Races 3%
% Student Population Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander < 1%
% Student Population American Indian/Alaska Native < 1%
% Student Population White 17%

See the skew, boo?

DP. Why “should” a school have the same demographics as the entire city? And if it’s SO critical, why aren’t you bashing the Ward 3 schools?

These demographics arguments are so tired.

Yes - I’m a parent of high-performing black boys and in no way would I prefer a school that is one-to-one reflective of DC demographics overall.

And if folks can’t understand why you are absolutely clueless w/r/t the unique, tricky, and toxic academic and
social dynamics high-performing black kids face in a sea of similarly-hued chronically struggling students….or you don’t care because my black kids are “privileged” and so should just have to put up with whatever (from whoever), even though that means that my kids have to deal with racial crap (from all sides) above and beyond what other students face.

But yeah, BASIS “should” be 80% black for “equity.”

They lost more kids going from sixth to seventh grade - they went from 110 to 89. That's kind of a funny year to leave.

Not funny. 5th graders don't take BASIS comps, 6th graders do. The experience is v. unpleasant for some of the kids.

Yeah, 5th grade is BASIS-lite. Sixth grade is much more stressful with four weeks of comp testing (mock pre-comps, pre-comps, mock comps, comps) and all the time leading up to those weeks in between - it feels like comps are a constant focus of the school day/year. BASIS loses even A students who just want a different school experience and have other options to do so.
