White flight from MCPS

If you look at the county demographic data this doesn't match. We still have plenty of white people living in MoCo. More of them are just opting to not send their children to MCPS.

Many of the young, affluent whites in MoCo are child-free.

....Which may lead to forgoing the latter (remaining child-free) to maintain the former (sense of affluence).

It’s not white flight. It’s just Hispanics and black families often having more kids than white couples. I have yet to meet a DINK Hispanic or black couple.

Also having fewer babies in general than other raises, and not immigrating here in large numbers from elsewhere.

For at least the past 10 years, Hispanic, Black, Asian, and Multiracial have *each* had more *absolute* (not percentage!) population growth than White.

Look at the two races or more category in the chart for MCPS. It doesn’t have explosive growth.

And if you watched the BOE meeting, they basically said a lot of the Hispanic students we’re picking up migrants fleeing from Central and South America.

So as a school system, we are replacing middle and higher income white students with higher need lower income Hispanic students. As a system that has an impact on the wellbeing and resources to the school system.

So you're a great replacement theorist, then?

No. I’m not even white.

This was shared in the CIP BOE meeting. You can see the clear trendline that white non-hispanic students are fleeing MCPS while Hispanic rises. Black and Asian are holding pretty steady.

OP, you really have to learn to distinguish between "the number of white students is declining" and "white people are fleeing."

As someone else in this thread stated, this has become a societal problem. The education system is broken across every single board. (Yes, cue the "BUT MY PRIVATE SCHOOL!" parents to chime in) Private schools are broken too. Stop looking for a magical fix by changing schools. Start at home.

+1. Folks aren’t going to be able to flee to private to escape because there is not enough spots. Schools that over enrolled during Covid are now taking less students to rebalance their numbers. Further, schools(at least quality ones) are getting more and more expensive. Moving districts won’t help because all districts have their issues and you still have to find housing. Folks were fleeing to Loudon only to realize that the explosive growth was causing schools to have to constantly be doing boundary studies and then encounter some of the same issues. Things won’t be fixed until folks stop trying to run away from problems and instead get involved to help solve them.

Teachers would love to start fixing things. We would like appropriate discipline, curriculum that matches the level of students, grades that match student performance, student accountability, supports for sped and eml students, etc… Unfortunately in this county you’re not allowed to say any of that because you’d be considered racist. This county ONLY cares about race and optics and if you’re not on board, you are racist.

At least private schools do not have to admit some of the kids we are dealing with. Privates can look for parent involvement, on-grade level students with no or minimal behaviors, the ability to discipline, and most importantly, the right to not ask a child back the next year. If you truly believe that privates are = to publics, you are very ignorant.

Interesting as in hs we have some teachers doing that. Maybe it’s time you start.

Virtually every person I know from Mexico and South America are amazing, highly educated, wonderful people. They are cultured, family people, and tremendously value education. So there can't be a problem just because of an increase in "hispanic" people.

Is this sharp rise in the MCPS hispanic population actually due to illegal immigration of poor and/or violent people from central america? If so this is definitely a broader society problem and blame can be placed on on federal government for it's open border polices.

If you read between the lines of the BOE meeting, it seems we’re getting an influx of the latter and not the former.

ICYMI: an 18 year old Latina was murdered by 3 other latinos (teens) this may and the killers were recently arrested. They cut off her head with a machete and dumped the body in a wooded area near a park in Olney.

It barely made the news.

^^^This is in our local schools. It’s a gang problem with rampant violence. It’s why many of them allegedly left Central America.

Solution: Support policies that drastically reduce illegal immigration and closing the border.

Did the opposite. Pretty happy with the W experience. Downside is scale, but that's also the upside.

NP - same. Thrilled with our W feeder but would note that we first were zoned for a different elementary in the district and while it was good it wasn’t nearly as wonderful as our current school.

How does a new PR contract deal with problems in MCPS? How does expanding the number of administrators in Central Office? How does not having enough teachers, special educators, para educators, school psychologists, and counselors? How about the lack of immediate options for placement of students with behavioral problems?

The priorities of MCPS affects the student outcomes. If the challenges have changed, the priorities should also pivot. More resources should be for in school staff and special programs to meet student needs which could be achieved in downsizing Central Office.

That's what racists always claim to let us know it's okay for them to say racist things. It really isn't and nobody believes them.
