| Do sheds need a permit in the jurisdiction? If so, it's likely missing the permit, too. |
| Seriously though. What do you think will happen if you report it. You know the inspectors can’t go in someone’s property without permission. If they can’t inspect it, then no citation. Even if there is a citation, it can’t be enforced (i.e. inspectors can’t come in your property and remove it). |
| There’s only one option. Burn the mofo down. |
+1 this was my favorite idea 😂 |
1. False. 2. It's irrelevent if they cant enforce. At this point you're dealing with a jerk neighbor so you build the civil case. And you crush them for fun in the process. |
This is actually the only way you can get rid of your neighbors shed. Sorry. Reporting won’t get you anywhere if the neighbor does not want to make any changes. |
You really think that the city or county can't issue fines against the property? You think the city or county can't obtain a court order requiring removal? |
| Plant a skunk in the shed. |
| Code aside, how does the shed look? Do you think it negatively affects your property value? What if they moved it in 5 feet? Would that make it better or worse? |
| You guys don’t understand how code enforcement works. Our neighbors started building a DIY tiny house thing in the backyard. Code enforcement came and made them take it down. I assume someone called it in (several houses can see the backyard because of how the backyards line up). |
| Wow, you are so petty. I’m glad you’re not a neighbor. Clearly you have too much time on your hands. |
| I hear you OP. I live in a small rowhouse so my neighbors shed blocked a large portion of our view of trees and the rain draining off it is rotting a section of our fence (it's like 5 inches away max, not even a foot). I need to ask them to put a down spout on it draining into THEIR yard, but frankly when the fence rots out entirely I just won't be in a hurry to replace it on that side. The shed goes half the distance already. They can deal with having the other half open. |
| I would ask them to move the shed. Having the shed so close to your fence may lead to problems for you and could affect the value of your property. Rules are created for a reason. You have a right to ask your neighbors. They don't sound very nice anyway. What do you have to lose by asking them to move the shed? |

Our shed (here before we moved in) is one foot from the fence (I think it’s our fence for what it’s worth) and in the 15 years I’ve been here I’ve never had reason to access my neighbors yard to address the shed. I hope you aren’t the type to call in an illegal tree house too. A friend of hours had to change their tree fort that was supported by 2 by 4s in the ground to make it fully supported by the tree (which is bad for the tree) due to unfriendly neighbors.
That said, sounds like your neighbors may be jerks too, so choose your battles carefully |
NP, but does this situation really matter? I'm debating calling the county on a neighbor on my street, about 4 house down. They put a pool in, but didn't construct a fence. And actually used the pool during Aug/Sept They put some shrubbery on their property line but no actual fence. Part of me wants to MYOB, but part of me does worry about the safety issue |
