It is developmentally appropriate for kids to be able to sit at age five and learn academics. You take them to the playground before school and after school and they have recess. If its not appropriate, then hold your kid back and start them in K at 7-8-9 when you feel its appropriate. |
DD had a teacher who was fond of passing the buck and escalating to the principal when it was not appropriate. DD was not sent to the principal but witnessed a lot of boys being sent there for things like "talking back," not being able to sit still, failing to follow directions on a worksheet. K teacher. This was a teacher issue, not a student issue or a school issue. Some teachers just stink at classroom management. No, it's not developmentally appropriate for 5 year old boys to be able to sit all day in class and do worksheets. Why do you type things out about stuff you don't understand? |
MCPS doesn't have kids do worksheets all day. Most don't even have enough paper for that many worksheets. |
I have two decades of experience so I think I understand how the MCPS machine works than you do. Per your post above, you think the teacher is to blame. She is frivolously sending your child to the principal for what you consider to be age appropriate behavior. As a parent, MCPS doesn’t care about what you consider to be age appropriate behaviors or not. Request an IEP meeting and the teacher will have to explain why your child is repeatedly being sent to the principal. It’s best to as questions to the team vs. demands. These are questions you can ask to the IEP team and teacher: 1) Is it normal for a student in X grade to be sent to the principal for XYZ behavior? 2) How much instruction/recess/lunch time is your son missing to address the behavior? 3) Are there alternative best practices for interventions that have tried with your child? 4) How effective are these strategies? 5) Has anyone performed a classroom observation for your child? 6) Does data need to be collected to determine whether your child has a disability? 7) Is missing educational opportunities an appropriate response and what’s the impact on your child? 8) Has anyone considered the impact on your child’s self esteem? 9) What forms of positive reinforcement have been tried to improve behavior? By calling the IEP team meeting, the school will then be on notice of the excessive visits to the principal’s office. There will be pressure to stop sending your child to the principal. Best case scenario, extra supports will be given so there is positive reinforcement for good behavior and better strategies for classroom management. |
Child Find is a requirement in the IDEA. It is not solely a MCPS department that has adopted that name. Child Find refers to the legal requirement for public schools to identify all children with disabilities and their needs. |
If you are not there how do you know it is the 'same' behavior. Btw my dh is a teacher and he says the boys overwhelming misbehave. There are girls but they are not the norm. So why don't you focus on your boy "assertiveness" and tell him to be quiet and listen to the teacher? |
\ Teachers should expect kids not to wrestle in class and break things! Teach your sons to be better! |
\ Boo hoo. Teachers are biased against girls. The teachers ( female and male) call on boys more than girls. https://forums.atozteacherstuff.com/index.php?threads/do-teachers-call-on-boys-more-than-girls.50049/ |
Or working printers and copy machines. |
Many boys that age I know hate bathing/showering. More than the girls I know. Why do you think that is the case? |
|
As someone in the system for almost 2 decades the system is fully stacked against boy behaviors. It’s a real thing. Girls can be loud in the hall and it’s ignored. Boys cause any sound and they get reprimanded.
Every action a boy makes is criticized. There’s no hope. |
Provide a source that says 5yo kids don't need to move except for a short recess every day. |
That is such bull crap and you know it |
| I suggest you all ask all the elementary teachers you know: have you ever been bitten, spit on, cursed at, or hit in the classroom? If so, was it by a boy or a girl? See what responses you get. |
| Yes 💯 boys are discriminated against. Most teachers are women and really do not understand boys unless they have a son. Boys move around, they fidget, they call out, they need breaks. Many female teachers get annoyed with this. It’s sad to see since I have a son. |
