DD was not sent to the principal but witnessed a lot of boys being sent there for things like "talking back," not being able to sit still, failing to follow directions on a worksheet. K teacher. This was a teacher issue, not a student issue or a school issue. Some teachers just stink at classroom management. No, it's not developmentally appropriate for 5 year old boys to be able to sit all day in class and do worksheets. Why do you type things out about stuff you don't understand?[/quote] I have two decades of experience so I think I understand how the MCPS machine works than you do. Per your post above, you think the teacher is to blame. She is frivolously sending your child to the principal for what you consider to be age appropriate behavior. As a parent, MCPS doesn’t care about what you consider to be age appropriate behaviors or not. Request an IEP meeting and the teacher will have to explain why your child is repeatedly being sent to the principal. It’s best to as questions to the team vs. demands. These are questions you can ask to the IEP team and teacher: 1) Is it normal for a student in X grade to be sent to the principal for XYZ behavior? 2) How much instruction/recess/lunch time is your son missing to address the behavior? 3) Are there alternative best practices for interventions that have tried with your child? 4) How effective are these strategies? 5) Has anyone performed a classroom observation for your child? 6) Does data need to be collected to determine whether your child has a disability? 7) Is missing educational opportunities an appropriate response and what’s the impact on your child? 8) Has anyone considered the impact on your child’s self esteem? 9) What forms of positive reinforcement have been tried to improve behavior? By calling the IEP team meeting, the school will then be on notice of the excessive visits to the principal’s office. There will be pressure to stop sending your child to the principal. Best case scenario, extra supports will be given so there is positive reinforcement for good behavior and better strategies for classroom management. [/quote]
