It’s health Ed in hs.

Not just health in health. Out kids' HS takes one study hall per week away for this garbage.

We don't have a study hall and advisory only meets a few times a semester. It is very cool specific.

As a former ES teacher and someone who is pissed about duty/advisory... We have advisory every single day and we have lessons. I never had duty as an ES teacher but I'm expected to...meanwhile "Team Leads" have 4 classes per day, no duty,no advisory... Per MCEA contract, we should only have 5 classes. We have six because of advisory.

Elementary is different. We are talking high school and it's very school specific. Our school only has advisory a few times a semester. Other schools have it daily. When we had advisory in MS, the lessons were a joke and teacher did very little. We never had it in ES.

Based on the topic, we're talking middle school.

My MS still makes team leaders hav an advisory

You can also argue the part of the contract for secondary teachers that states that 50% of the time during the student day when you’re not teaching classes has to be “individually managed”. I bet your meetings and advisory cut into that time and it’s a contract violation.

It’s on page 44 of the newest contract

Our MS has it just before lunch, 5 days a week. For those that have kids that don’t need it, my daughter appreciates it and takes full advantage of the extra time. It does allow her to meet with teachers or students if she needs extra help. Also she has a lot of extracurricular activities and she gets homework done. For every child that doesn’t need it, there are probably 2 that do.

That sounds like regular old study hall which is great. Every kid can use the time to do homework, meet with teachers, or take a break and chat with friends. As we see in this thread, that's not happening in all schools. Some are using the time to teach leftist ideology. Ours certainly did back in 2021 where we witnessed it with our own eyes when school was virtual.

I agree. I'd be fine with a study hall type class. Or a class where they simply had time to re-take tests, or get extra help.

That is not the case at our MS. The school is using the time for SEL lessons and some of them are definitely questionable.

x1000 to this comment. TEACH. MCPS do your job: TEACH the students! at Silver Creek or any middle school!

It'd help if parents actually did their job and raised children who understand how to act in a classroom, the value of hard work, and responsibility, we're left with kids that do nothing but moan if they have to work longer than 2 minutes and are addicted to phones. Stop blaming everyone else for your poor parenting skills which are at the root of the problem.

My kid who is motivated and well-behaved is bored to tears there. No phone. Still, I will not take credit for their behavior - just the way they are.
