Silly, it’s not about improving schools, it’s about salving liberal consciences.

God, you're dumb. And being deliberately obtuse.

In the future, if we’re going to name schools after people, how about naming them after Jesus Christ, the man without sin. Because everybody else is going to have some disqualifying event in their past, if you look hard enough.

LOL, let's at least name things after real people and not myths.

It means Black students aren't embarrassed to walk into those schools ever day.

+1. That's all it's about nobody ever claimed it would improve anything else.

I guess the argument would be that he oversaw a period of major expansion in FCPS, and that’s what they honored him for, not his views on integration. Also, that the school has had that name for 60+ years so now it’s just associated with the community, not the person.

Is there a particular replacement name in mind or would they just go with something inane like “Mosaic”?

+1. No one knows anything about the person behind the school name, so there's no need to change it. No one thinks about this unless they are bored and looking for something to be offended about. No one walks into that school or drives by it and feels offended.

On the other hand, there will be plenty of cons to renaming.

This is utter stupidity. DD did a research project on him two years ago. Just because you're an idiot and don't want to learn about the namesake of your school doesn't mean the rest of the community is the same way.

Has the Woodson community even been polled? Do they want to change the name?

I’d like to know Sizemore-Heizer’s position on this since she is now running for the Braddock seat. Should Lake Braddock be renamed as well? Gen. Edward Braddock waged war on Native Americans.

One million dollars.

It will cost up to $1,000,000 in total to change the name.

One million buys quite a bit of school supplies. Or salaries for many educators.

Is an unnecessary name change (over an issue nobody knows / cares about) really the best use of funds right now?

I believe you, but what does that entail - what do they do that costs a million dollars?? It's insane!

I just conducted a poll and 92% of the Woodson community supports renaming the school to "Yo Mama High School"

Wow, what a great use of tax dollars 🤑. Couldn’t all the teachers get great bonuses with that. Or maybe the kids get a social studies text book!

Because that's really what's been happening all this time until someone decided this was something to get worked up about.

If I had a kid at Woodson, I'd be so annoyed. I just bought all the uniforms and gear for my kids - sports, PE, band, etc. I would not be buying anything new for my kids. And I guess the neighborhood will have to paint over all those Ws on the streets?

This is all just so damn stupid. It's a waste of time and resources when the school board could be worried about bigger things like - I dunno - education.

I have kids and woodson and want a name change. I will buy new uniforms and a magnet for my car.

Little River High would be better. Or is it Main Street there? Main High School?

How about spending the money on tutoring services instead?
all fcps students get free 24/7 online tutoring.

That's great if you want to do it on your dime. But you no doubt don't plan to pay for:

Uniforms - every WTW sport team
Band and other uniforms
Gym floors and athletic fields
Signage
Stationery
Banners at other schools in the Patriot District
FCPS external and internal web sites
Other IT-related costs

If there were any evidence that FCPS named this school after Woodson because he held segregationist views, that might point in a different direction. But since there isn't, asking taxpayers to foot a large bill because you've decided decades later he should be cancelled is a bit much.

You forgot all the administrative costs to change all of these names. Someone has to spend time on this --a lot of time by a lot of employees. I don't think they factor that into the total when they tell us how much the changes cost.

Add to that the expenses to the families who have to purchase the new spirit gear, etc.

Definitely need a name change.

This paper should be required reading for all students - maybe as part of a history or writing or speech class. It is likely these students will face racist opinions or secrecy unwritten policies or practices like this. Our schools should teach children how to properly respond to these racist opinions and secret practices. I see many racist responses on this thread…
