Air BnB or VRBO is pur first choice
Embassy Suites style place with 2 beds plus a pullout sofa or a rollaway is pur secind choice 2 rooms, last choice because $$$ (not always - in 2018 in Costa Rica hotel rooms were under $100 each!) |
| Yes, almost always. I prefer two rooms at a cheaper hotel vs. one room at a nicer place. If it's more than 2 nights we'd usually get an Airbnb/VRBO. |
| About a year ago I decided I never want to share a room with my teens again. They are 19 and 17. |
I’m the PP you quoted (someone else seems to have jumped onto this as well). I hear you about needing to stay within budget. Growing up, all of my vacations were camping trips or stays with relatives, because that’s what my parents could afford. It was fun, but I think my back may still be sore 40+ years later... Just not being in a sleeping bag is a huge step up, and I’m grateful that our current travel budgets are likewise better-padded. We save a lot on airfare and with 4th night free credit card benefits, so some of our budget can be re-allocated to the extra room. Travel is not fun if anyone has to stress about the bill, but we also need a sense of privacy too! |
| We were in Spain this summer and we had to book 2 rooms in many of the hotels we stayed in because all the family rooms were already booked. It was such a nice break to have my 14 yo twins in their own room! And the kids loved it too! But was so much cheaper in Spain- we couldn’t afford to do this in the US on a regular basis. |
| We booked one room for a long time but when they hit 18/19 we started really trying for vrbo for the extra space. |
At least when booking online, you need to say there'll be one adult in each room, plus kids. It's not as though the hotels check once you arrive. My kids aren't fans of travel, for the most part. Things go better when they have their own room and we can follow our own sleep schedules. But if they loved traveling and the only way we could do it was to have all five of us in one room, I wouldn't give it a second thought |
| Tweens right now but we are a husband/wife and a boy and a girl. Mom and daughter share a bed and dad and son share a bed. I'd imagine that this can work fine for a while. There are other things we'd rather spend money on. |
| We have 4 kids so yes at least one extra room. When they are teens May get two extra - one for the boys and one for the girls. |
+1 for us, DD especially has a hard time sleeping in the same room as DH because he has a loud CPAP. So everyone is happier when well rested. We'd rather get two rooms at a budget motel for not much more than a mid-range hotel. We'll suck it up with one room if it's just a quick late arrival/early departure situation. And more than two nights is almost always a condo/house rental. |
This is where we are too except I have two girls. If the room happens to have a sofa bed the older teen will take it but if not she’s really fine. Sometimes they will sleep with each other but usually not. I hate home rentals - I don’t want to get in the car for every meal and cup of coffee or have to go grocery shopping on vacation and then empty out the fridge at the end. We did it when they were small and had naps and early bedtimes but I’m so glad to be done. I also prefer hotel cancellation policies. |
That wouldn’t be a vacation for me. |
PP. Trust me, if I could afford it, I would get two rooms/suite. I don’t jam us together for philosophical reasons. |
DP here. To each his own. I don’t like budget motels or vacation rentals. |
| We stopped doing afmly vacations when I was 15 or 16, but no , never. One room for hte 5 of us in a hotel, 1 or 2 bedroom place if |
