I’m the PP you quoted (someone else seems to have jumped onto this as well). I hear you about needing to stay within budget. Growing up, all of my vacations were camping trips or stays with relatives, because that’s what my parents could afford. It was fun, but I think my back may still be sore 40+ years later... Just not being in a sleeping bag is a huge step up, and I’m grateful that our current travel budgets are likewise better-padded.

We save a lot on airfare and with 4th night free credit card benefits, so some of our budget can be re-allocated to the extra room. Travel is not fun if anyone has to stress about the bill, but we also need a sense of privacy too![/quote]

+1 for us, DD especially has a hard time sleeping in the same room as DH because he has a loud CPAP. So everyone is happier when well rested.
We'd rather get two rooms at a budget motel for not much more than a mid-range hotel. We'll suck it up with one room if it's just a quick late arrival/early departure situation. And more than two nights is almost always a condo/house rental.[/quote]
