| Do you know why I tip so well? Because every time I see a minimally paid service worker in this area I wonder where they live, how far they had to commute, and how they can afford nutritious food for themselves, much less a family if that is their situation. I have so much .... makes me feel good. The landlords soaking people for every dime make me sick, not the restaurants pushing for tips for their employees. |
If that happens I’ll simply stop going out to eat. I can cook perfectly well at home. |
You're tipping to absolve yourself of your guilt, so you're buying your way out of what you're feeling. Everything else is just excuses you tell yourself. I don't tip takeaway or self serve. And never at bakeries or coffee shops where the screen pops up with the tip amount. I almost never dine out at restaurants but the few times I do, 20% is what I will put down unless there is already a service charge added to the bill. If there is one, the service is deducted from the tip I'd otherwise leave. |
The mature and generous and truly non-self-centered thing to do is lobby the people in charge to raise minimum wages. It’s not to refuse to tip the waiters. You’re making excuses to justify your own avarice. |
Well, you’re an ass but at least you’re and honest ass. You’re not pretending that you don’t tip because you want to help the workers. bar |

If the service is adequate, I do 10% for coffee shops and take-out, and 18-20% for sit-down restaurants. There is no way I am doing more than 20%. I don't have a money tree. |
Before or after taxes and the new surcharge? |

I agree.. it's just a way for employers to pass on the burden of fair wages to the customer while keeping menu prices low. I would love for business owners to raise prices , and suggest only optional minimum tips.
Would help control the inflation, as more people stop dining out due to sticker shock and servers start finding more lucrative jobs. Good in the long run, kind of same as airlines being forced to include all taxes in the final displayed fare |

Typical DCUM: 1. Tips more than most people. 2. Excoriates people who tip the normal amount, or not at all (which is also normal). 3. Goes into a frenzy when they're rightly ignored. |

Nope. They have already raised prices. We are now paying at fast-decent places like Noodles what we used to pay at restaurants less than 3 years ago. on top of that, tipping expectations have also gone up. Double whammy! And yes, I'd rather the restaurant compete on price vs. this backdoor bullshit. |
Nope. A business will charge as much as they can get away with regardless of other factors. Don't kid yourself. Restaurant owners WILL raise prices regardless of how much you tip. They are in it to make maximum profit. Period. The rest of it - employee satisfaction, community engagement, hiring locals, etc. - is just BS. A major reason for the inflation is business owners' greed. They want to maximize profit. I love that as an investor, but let's understand the reality. |
what are you eating where a penny is 20%, are you from 1925? |

It was so nice to go to Japan and get excellent service without the need for tips.
Tip screens drive me crazy in the US at the moment. I was willing to deal with them during the pandemic to keep my favorite places alive, but now it is way worse. |
DP. I'm glad you see it! This is the right time too. There's still a shortage of employees, which gives them the opportunity to 'put the squeeze' on their employer. If not, they can quit and find another job, can't they? |
