This. The defining aspect of Northeastern is the coop program. I can't believe it took 3 pages for that to even be mentioned. You should go to Northeastern if you want to combine school and work by alternating periods of classes with periods of coop work. Northwestern is a more traditional university experience. |
PP, I mentioned it (11:26) But, the real reason it hasn't been discussed more thoroughly here is that the teenager OP doesn't care about actual differences between the schools; they just really, really want to go to school in Boston. |
Umm.. what matters is what it is now. |
Yeah anybody can improve if you know how to play the game. |

OP are you back off your meds? You are obsessed with Northeastern! We get it, your kid was not accepted. Let it go. |
I have a degree from Northwestern. I hated Northwestern. Northeastern just isn’t at the same level as Northwestern, but it’s a fine research university in a fun location, and it’s thrilled to get applications from well-rounded, high-stats kids who get shut out of the T20 lottery schools. Maybe it’s now getting a better group of normal great high-stats kids than most of the T20 schools, because it has a saner selection process and offers some of the high-stats applicants at least enough merit aid to get the price down to the cost of going to a place like the University of Wisconsin out of state. The typical class might not really be as great as a comparable Northwestern class. But the typical class will be very good, the typical student will be great, and it’s easy to find jobs and internships in the Boston area. Another consideration is that Northeastern has been known for its CO-OP program and preparing students for careers in business. Some people used to look down on it for being so work-oriented. But now the pendulum has swung, and people seem to want every school to be career-oriented. And Northwestern is a very hard-headed, career-oriented place itself. It’s not at all a place to go if you want to sit in a quad BSing about philosophy. So, on any given day, Northwestern might be more like Northeastern than people expect. But the difference is that normal high-stats kids can get into Northeastern without divine intervention. |
Northwestern has Doha campus as the only real "Satellite campus". However, they do not take kids applying to Evanston campus and say "go to doha for 1-3 years and then we might let you come to Evanston". It's a completely separate experience. |
Most students at northwestern do meaningful summer internships. In engineering, over 30% do coops. Coop is not unique to NEU. And based on the rapid growth at NEU in the last 3-4 years, without the full infrastructure to support it, there are plenty of kids who want a coop, applied to 150+ and cannot find one. Which means they just take classes instead, and likely didn't search for a meaningful internship, so might only graduate with 1 coop, not 2 or 3. Coop is great, but it can be done for STEM at many many other schools. |
And Northwestern is ranked much higher now. |
Depends on your definition of 'much' Assuming you are going by USN&WR, Northwestern is #10 and Northeastern is #44 out of 3000+ 4 year colleges/universities. Doesn't seem much. More importantly as shown above, major stats for these two schools are at the same level today. |
It’s not overrated at all. So many of you can only think of MIT and Harvard that you don’t see the other 45 or so colleges in Boston and Cambridge. I had a great time there in the late 80s. It’s a compact city with bridges over the Charles River separating the two cities. Anywhere you go you’ll see students and activities involving students. There’s a reason it’s called a college town. |
The only thing I’ve ever heard about Northwestern is that they have an excellent theatre program. |
Why would you think they "don't have the infrastructure to support it"? Northeastern has been buying up small universities all over the world, and has about ten campuses from London to Canada, to everywhere. You need to do your research before you try to talk out of your arse. In addition, Northeastern's Engineering programs are tops, including the Engineering Coops. I know several current Northeastern students that are singing the praises of their Engineering coops. You sound like you have never once set foot on campus, and you come here every week to claim more of the same nonsense. Get a life. |
Don't bother feeding the troll who has never been to Boston. |
