We had a few sessions with a college counselor and she kept suggesting northeastern. Are they getting a kickback? I’m sure it’s a fine school but I’m a litttle suspicious in how quickly it has turned its reputation around. I’m worried it’s a little bit of a fad/bubble.

It has been around since the 1800s. Also it is known for student wellness.

Some time in the past few months, among the many Northeastern threads there is one describing complaints about the recent admission process. They are trying to grow their brand with too many satellite campuses and their admission decisions did not make sense (e.g. admitting high stats applicant to a campus they did not request).

Traditionally, the reason to choose Northeastern has long been the co op program. For those not interested in co op, the main appeal is the Boston location and the apparent variety of majors offered. To me, admission to a satellite campus with later transfer to Boston is weird and unattractive. Want Boston that much, then choose a college that admits you there for freshman year.

I have a rising senior who will be a NMSF. I am not thrilled with Northeastern but he loves Boston and prefers an urban environment, so it's on the list, along with BU. My understanding is that Northeastern is offering less merit lately, which is unfortunate, as I don't see the value for the high price tag and would feel better about that with a merit discount. Incidentally, Northwestern is at the top of his list, even though it is not urban. He likes the vibe best and the location is still a good one, from his perspective. We did visit in Feb... (I have lived near both and really hope he gets into Northwestern as it's closer and all around easier from a parent perspective. We are paying in full either way and would much prefer Northwestern. Northeastern's location is kind of a pain in the rear as a parent visitor - hotels are cheaper in the burbs.)

If I recall, about half the class of 2027 was admitted to a satellite campus (Oakland comes to mind; I can't remember the others) and half to Boston. It doesn't matter if you indicate in Common App that you only want to be considered for Boston - they may decide to admit you elsewhere anyway.
