Does MPD actually do anything?

“No pursuit policy.” You voted for this. It’s your city council.

What are you gonna do? Vote differently??

The risks of pursuing people for something like running a red light don't come anywhere near the benefits of locking them up immediately, especially given how many cameras there are around the city. If this driver almost hit a pedestrian, what makes you think the cop wouldn't have hit them?

so tell me then, what incentives are there for me to not run every red light?

Dunno, maybe you don't want to get hit by traffic coming in the other direction? Maybe you like to obey laws even if you don't think you'll face immediate consequences because you generally believe in being a member of society? Maybe you don't want a ticket in the mail later from the camera that's positioned on an increasingly large number of intersections?

Is this the part where you tell us how the three bicyclists killed in DC over the past five years is a huge deal but the 15,000 annual crime victims is no biggie?

Oh good, another in a continuing series, "Everything Boils Down to Bashing People Who Ride Bikes." Let the record reflect that no one mentioned bicycles at all until you did.

For two decades plus, crime improved little by little each year. Now we’re seeing it go the other way.

A shootout today ended with a pregnant woman dead. Another murder by stabbing.

Just the knowledge that no cars on the road are required to have a license plate changes everything for crime.

Does it? I agree that crime is increasingly a problem, but I'm not sure how much of a deterrent effect the prospect of being pulled over for bad license plates would have on someone who's going to shoot or stab someone.

Just knowing that a car can roll up anytime, guys get out with guns, rob someone, and drive away untraceable. This happened to someone I know but it could happen to anyone, any small business, etc.

That has always been the case. 20 years ago it would also have been the same.

But, it is happening at an increasing rate, to more and more innocent people, all over our city.

Apparently you are just fine with that?

This. It’s like the gun argument. If someone wants to kill someone, enforcing traffic or gun laws won’t make any difference.

Nah. A spirit of lawlessness is contagious and compounding.

Well, you're agreeing with my reply, but I actually think there's a difference between enforcing traffic laws and enforcing gun laws in terms of deterrence and overall crime prevention. Enforcing gun laws will do more to protect everyone than enforcing traffic laws would -- for one, it gets guns off the streets, and for another, having an illegal gun would seem to make you likelier to commit violent crime in the future than simply running a red light.

They've been great in my neighborhood. Thanks MPD!

My only experience with them is reporting an open drug sale to children I witnessed. Internally debated whether or not it was worth reporting it. I talked to an older colleague who is ex-MPD about it and he said they would probably send an uncover officer to the scene to check things out. Afterwards, I spoke with MPD, giving them a detailed description of the dealer and location. They told me too much time had passed so they could not do anything. Not even half a day had gone by
