I don't understand why MPD is never "walking the beat," getting to know residents on the streets, making their presence known. Isn't that community policing 101?
If MPD is out-of-sight-out-of-mind to me as a law-abiding citizen, imagine the perception to a criminal. |

Federal prosecutors have done a 180 on gun possession, the changes happened during the Trump administration.
Getting caught with a gun - even if you were not committing another crime - meant you were in jail for a while, got a record, etc. Now? It's a no-paper and you're released, the cops just keep the gun. The country is flooded with guns and people can buy one illegally very easily and cheaply. Cops and prosecutors are turning away from enforcing gun laws. |
Yep. Prosecutors seem to think, "Well, we got a gun off the streets, that's good enough." It isn't when the person they release without charging can very easily get a new illegal firearm in a matter of hours. Take, for instance, one recent arrest for illegal firearm possession. The accused told the police to hurry up and get him to "Kangaroo Court" so he could be "no-papered." Anyone who's caught with an illegal gun in DC knows the worst that is likely to happen is that they get their gun taken away. https://twitter.com/dccrimefacts/status/1668785705428852737 Studies have shown that a huge deterrent to violent crime is fear of swift and certain punishment (not long sentences). When more than 60 percent of gun arrests in DC result in zero prosecution and only 12 percent result in prison sentences, it gives the people who use illegal fireams the feeling that they can do so without fear of punishment. https://twitter.com/dccrimefacts/status/1668785697279410179 |
20 year DC resident here. You realize these policies have absolutely ZERO to do with Trump administration and everything to do with City Council, right? |
Nope. The DOJ federal prosecutors make the decision to file charges or decides to "no paper." Most arrests by MPD are adults, not kids. The only area where DC has discretion is if a minor was arrested; then its up to our elected AG. Anyone caught with a gun and is a felon is looking at mandatory minimum of one year in jail. These are getting no-papered all the time. https://criminallawdc.com/dc-gun-lawyer/penalties/ |
I read that as many as 60% of criminal cases are just dropped by the USAO. That has nothing to do with DC Council. |
But it may have a lot to do with DC having a crime lab that isn't even certified. Until Bowser gets that house in order, I won't find her credible on crime. She would rather blame Council than get the lab working. |
It also has a ton to do with MPD losing all trust from their community. Basically any cases that rely on officer testimony and don't have undeniable video evidence are not going to trial because nobody believes anything cops say anymore. |
