Your example is terrible. People throughout the CONTINENT of Africa know that all of North America is not the US. That is the point. No one expects people to know provinces and territories of African countries but to speak of them as COUNTRIES is a fair expectation. Americans are ignorant of anything not American; specifically things in and on the African continent. |
Not in Beverly Hills it’s not or any mega wealthy zipcode. Hell even in parts of Potomac people have huge gated compounds. We’re not talking about Bethesda, though I’ve seen gates there as well. |

MIL is like many DCUMers, OP.
You’ll get little empathy or understanding here. Sounds like she is fear mongering with extreme and inaccurate information. Try to ignore her. |
Very true of many Americans. |
| With so many countries to choose from, why did you pick South Africa? |
+1 - this cracked me up. "Style of architecture" LOL Iron gates topped with razor wise, patrolled by armed guards... in the style of NeoGothic Romanticism |
Oh, you have NO idea. You sound like one of those privileged white women who have no idea how bad life can be in some other parts of the world. Especially for women. And especially for women of color. No, we have is pretty good here in the USA. |
+1 A family I follow on instagram has traveled the world for years and the one place they experienced theft was in SA. They were loading luggage in their car and in the time it took them to go back inside to grab another bag their window was smashed and luggage stolen. This was 20 years ago, but my friend who has family in SA always talked about how at night when you drive you never stop at stop lights. |
I didn’t. My kid did. |
| Maybe she was saying ‘sedan’ not ‘Sudan’. Been a lot of carjackings there. |
Nobody said anything about “mega wealthy zip codes.” In SA, someone living in an SFH somewhere analogous to Silver Spring has all four sides of their house gated. |
SA is the rape capital of the world. |
