News flash, a majority of homes throughout the continent are gated. That is the style of architecture. Look at homes in Ghana, Nigeria and other countries.

The style of architecture, my a**!

SA has a lot of problems and the country has been teetering on the edge of, well, a very uncertain future and it's slowly getting worse and worse. Infrastructure is decaying rapidly. Loadshedding is getting worse. It's hugely corrupt. Tension is real. There's a serious election coming up and it's unpredictable what will happen afterward. That said, your daughter will most likely be fine as long as she takes precaution. But... SA still has a lot of problems. As an old SA hand told me, SA's slide into the "real" Africa is inevitable.

But I am amused at that your MIL knows what's going on in Sudan because I bet only 1 out of 50 Americans even know there is something going on in Sudan and most of them will only be able to say there's something goin on in Sudan without telling exactly what is going on in Sudan.

I can’t imagine being more concerned about my MIL’s grasp if geography than about my daughter going to the rape capital of the world. I hope you’re DCUM rich and hired a bodyguard for her the entire time she’s there.

Capetown is fine. My biggest criticism of Capetown is that it's a very long trip to be in what is essentially a cleaner. slightly more scenic San Francisco. But great art and design scene. But yeah, to your major point, people don't seem to realize that Congo alone is the size of the US west of the Mississippi, and there are 52 more countries almost as big. It's huge.

You're missing the big picture and are ignoring the actual message. Your MIL is confusing two different areas of the same continent but the underlying message is simply that she is worried for your daughter's safety while abroad. Your MIL may have only a vague grasp of African geography, but is well aware that much of Africa is relatively unsafe due weak and corrupt governments, inefficient economies, political, social, tribal and religious factionalism, ineffective law enforcement and a 3rd world medical infrastructure.

Yes, SA and Sudan are different places, but you're willfully avoiding the real point, which is that SA is exceedingly dangerous, especially for women.

Did she hire a bodyguard escort?

I would be annoyed that grandma can’t look up where Sudan and South Africa are in relation to each other.

I will say that there is an incredibly high amount of violence against women in South Africa. Your daughter really should be aware of the violence against women, research expectations, and safety recommendations, and prepare accordingly.

"South Africa is considered to be the rape capital of the world with 10 818 rape cases reported in the first quarter of 2022.1 The rate at which women are killed by intimate partners in this country is five times higher than the global average.2 Gender-based violence (GBV), a widespread and common occurrence in SA, is deeply ingrained in homes, workplaces, cultures and traditions". https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10091185/#:~:text=South%20Africa%20is%20considered%20to,the%20first%20quarter%20of%202022.&text=The%20rate%20at%20which%20women,higher%20than%20the%20global%20average.

+1000. OP you may be able to pick out Cape Town on a map, but clearly know nothing about the city.

I tell her my kid is now an adult and thanks for your concern. I tell her to look at a map of the continent again and again but she shows her ignorance daily.

/rant off

You don’t like your mother in law. We get it. You’re a boring DCUM cliche.

Or OP doesn’t like ignorance. Sounds like you’re on the MIL’s side.

I love my MIL. Like most Americans she is ignorant of African Geography.

You’re SO much better than all the other people, OP.

She is!
