My daughter leaves Thursday for a month in CapeTown. Not a day goes by with my MIL calling to tell us how much she is worried about what is going on in Sudan and how unsafe “Africa” is.
I tell her my kid is now an adult and thanks for your concern. I tell her to look at a map of the continent again and again but she shows her ignorance daily. /rant off |
You don’t like your mother in law. We get it. You’re a boring DCUM cliche. |
| SA is extremely unsafe. |
I love my MIL. Like most Americans she is ignorant of African Geography. |
You’re SO much better than all the other people, OP.
|
So is the USA, then. |
SA is orders of magnitude worse |
Nice try, SA has the highest rape rate in the world. |
| There’s a reason why anyone of means in SA has gates around all four sides of their house. |
| I just want to say that mine were nervous when we went to London (and we're Foreign Service who have been in war zones even). I was at a BBQ this past weekend where soooo many people said "I don't want to see anywhere outside the US!" and they all agreed. Except when we ask my inlaws to travel with us to Grand Canyon/Yellowstone/Santa Fe they decline. I agree with them that the US is incredible! But they aren't seeing it either. They're myopic. I also think they're scared of the world around them. |
Smart woman. Wouldn't want my child going to Africa either. |
So does anyone of means here. |

Clearly your MIL is ignorant as your title says. Africa is a MASSIVE and extremely diverse continent, one I have not been privileged enough to visit.
I will say that there is an incredibly high amount of violence against women in South Africa. Your daughter really should be aware of the violence against women, research expectations, and safety recommendations, and prepare accordingly. "South Africa is considered to be the rape capital of the world with 10 818 rape cases reported in the first quarter of 2022.1 The rate at which women are killed by intimate partners in this country is five times higher than the global average.2 Gender-based violence (GBV), a widespread and common occurrence in SA, is deeply ingrained in homes, workplaces, cultures and traditions". https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10091185/#:~:text=South%20Africa%20is%20considered%20to,the%20first%20quarter%20of%202022.&text=The%20rate%20at%20which%20women,higher%20than%20the%20global%20average. |

Go ask the people of South Africa to identify Atlanta or Boise or Phoenix on a map
Then come back and post how about the ignorant people of Africa don't know American geography Get over yourself, OP |
| OP don't respond to the Sudan comments. Educate her about Cape Town and SA. What is your DD going to be doing over there? |
