Least neediest “school” (hedge fund, just like Ken’s) on Earth.

He attended the school and it doesn’t matter if it is the neediest or not.

Agree..,,and he is preparing for his kids apps.
Chicagoan here…

Because he has 3 kids and the oldest is getting close to college age.

So what? For $300M, they can make room for his three kids and tons and tons of others.

Wow, didn’t know Harvard undergrad was expanding its # of seats.

Can someone explain to me why Harvard needs donations when they have such a huge endowment? Why solicit money at all?

100 percent this.

I can’t speak to Harvard specifically, but in general, funds in endowments are restricted in what they can be used for. They can’t just pull $300M out of existing funds for A&S Ph.D. programs and faculty salaries. And because alums of these graduate programs almost never go on to make big bucks, relative to, say, alums of law or business schools, finding alumni to give back in this particular area is very difficult.

Yes, like all colleges. You think they run for free? Donations are often given. Duh!

Is Harvard poor?

Well…no…BUT

Each school is run separately more like in the Oxford model. So undergrad is rich but divinity is very poor. In fact it’s had to be bailed out a few times. Business school is also rich. Fas doesn’t really get big name donors often and doesn’t do the kind of work that brings in, say, patent money. So it’s a bit sad but I’m not surprised.

This. End of story.

“Griffin’s gift to Harvard was unrestricted, the school said, and will go to the faculty of arts and sciences, which includes the undergraduate college and PhD programs. In 2014, Griffin made a $150m donation to the elite private university, primarily to fund financial aid.”

I don’t know anything about this guy but I work in higher ed advancement and funding for graduate programs in humanities is the hardest to come by these days. Seems like a pretty sweet deal.

Hear that LWNJs? He previously donated another fortune to fund financial aid. But do go on with your absolutely clueless whining.

No, it isn't. He's given a half a billion dollars to his alma mater. What is wrong with that?

Hopefully the donation will trickle down to the GSAS PhD student TAs who are barely making ends meet.

But some posters say the school doesn’t need it.

It doesn’t need it. It should spend its existing money so that it’s TAs working 60 hours/week aren’t making only $30k/year in Boston.

What do you give?

No one has ever heard of you.

Wow, the sour grapes and partisan nut jobs are out in full force. Good for Griffin. He can donate his money wherever he wants to and it sounds like it will make a world of difference to students who can't afford a Harvard education.

So true. I've never heard of any of the people named on my kids' college campus buildings. Most people haven't. So many mindless twits on this thread.

I'm a Harvard alum and this was exactly my thought.
