No, it isn't. He's given a half a billion dollars to his alma mater. What is wrong with that? |
PhDs in such subjects as math, physics and as previously mentioned, econ. I'd say those are pretty prestigious, certainly more than an MPA/MPP. |
Hopefully the donation will trickle down to the GSAS PhD student TAs who are barely making ends meet. |
. It’s because he is not a democrat. |
But some posters say the school doesn’t need it. |
| Why didn’t he donate it with the condition of removing legacy admissions, like Bloomberg did to JHU? |

From the article:
“Griffin’s gift to Harvard was unrestricted, the school said, and will go to the faculty of arts and sciences, which includes the undergraduate college and PhD programs. In 2014, Griffin made a $150m donation to the elite private university, primarily to fund financial aid.” I don’t know anything about this guy but I work in higher ed advancement and funding for graduate programs in humanities is the hardest to come by these days. Seems like a pretty sweet deal. |
It doesn’t need it. It should spend its existing money so that it’s TAs working 60 hours/week aren’t making only $30k/year in Boston. |
Because he has 3 kids and the oldest is getting close to college age. |
| It’s weird. Harvard is going to name a grad school & a building after a guy most people have never heard of? Unlike JFK? Is Harvard struggling. Next thing you do they’ll be proudly announcing a $300M donation from Bernie Madoff. |
This is the answer. Ask the Kushner’s. |
LOL! So true for this website! I'm a Harvard alum. I wish I could give it half a billion dollars because it changed my life. This is the system of all schools in America. You give back if you can. If I had If you don't like the system go t elsewhere. Oh wait, almost all international schools take alumni dollars. From the internet to explain to newbies: Why do universities ask for donations from alumni? Often, alumni gifts are used specifically to help current students. These alumni-funded scholarships help more students get access to a high-quality education. Unique and meaningful programs. Alumni often recall student programs that had a major impact on their college career. |
Let me guess, you’d like to bite off the hand that fed you in more ways than one. Pull the ladder out from under you. |
So what? For $300M, they can make room for his three kids and tons and tons of others. —not a Republican |
No, he isn't. Harvard's endowment is 52 billion. It provides financial aid to people like me. Read how endowments and gifts work. https://www.harvard.edu/about/endowment/. All univesities want to take gifts and will allow "naming". Most of the buildings at Harvard and Harvard law are named after the donors. Same at my slac. |
