Read the whole thread and the academy websites, it's all in there. Soph/junior year latest.

If you are thinking of going that route, you might want to look into Fork Union, Hargraves, Randolph-Macon and Fishburn for high school.
Don't see much discussion of these kinds of schools on the various DCUM threads.

This is true. I was very impressed with FUMA when we toured.

Which academy would a liberal from NW DC feel most comfortable?

Wow. PP, please re-read the thread. Basically, in terms of absolutely perfect comfort, maybe none.

Have your son write his Congressman and Senators now. Show interest. Study hard. Be involved in athletics. Try to get a leadership position.

cont. The academies want academics, leadership, and physical fitness.

If your son is a good athlete, he should go to one of the sports camps and try to get interest from a coach. If he is not a super student, a coach might help him get into Army Prep school.

I know of a kid who moved to DC for his jr and senior year for this reason.

Would you please elaborate on this question, with all sincereness. What about being a NW DC liberal makes you think you/ your dC would be uncomfortable at any of the academies? I assume most liberals like the idea of a good education while serving one's country... no?

Please don't start a political discussion about who loves America more or less. This is not the forum for that. Take it to the political forum if you want to debate whether liberals love this country just as much as non-liberals while servingour country....yes?

That is great advice. I am going to seriously look into this. NOVA is so competitive. I wouldn't have thought of it otherwise. Thanks!

Just be sure it is the right place to be otherwise. Moving to achieve a goal like this could lead to disappointment.

How many students from MD landed West Point appointments last year?

I was surprised at the academics. My high school/college boyfriend went to usna (c/o 2008) and his physics classes covered less than mine did in high school. (He was an econ major, but they all have to take a core set of essentially engineering classes). I don't think the challenge is the academics, it's the physical exhaustion, morale abuse, and strict rules. That makes the academics feel hard. Former boyfriend had small classes, mandatory study halls, and free private tutoring, so the academy was very invested in making academics doable.
