How often are students overdosing at school in FCPS HS? Is the problem overblown by media?

OMG. It’s like the kid never existed. Awful.

I’m sure the school pressures the family to keep quiet. Despicable.

+1

Typical FCPS. Rotten.

This should be a combined effort of schools and parents.

How many kids smoke these days? That used to be a problem in schools. Why did it stop? Ads and information about the effects.

How many parents are having serious talks about this with their kids?

It needs to start young--we teach kids not to take candy from strangers. This is just as serious. Don't take pills from your friends.

But, alsoL Joy does not come from a pill.

Ok, have any other conspiracy theories to share?

If a child were injured by a gun or knife in the school, we would hear about it.

This is just as serious and parents should know--how else will they be aware of the problem?

There were 2 deaths on the same day from the same school in Falls Church. Overdose or suicide - I don't know. But I'm surprised it didn't make the news or the school didn't send anything out. Both a spate of suicides and a string of overdoses should cause a community to talk about it. Never heard from the school or anything. They were just gone. One of the obits is here:

Who exactly is allowing taxpayer funded public schools to cover-up these drug poisonings on public school property? I know that the media is complicit in these cover-ups. It’s a relatively new phenomenon.

It’s not a cover up. They can only say so much because of the kid’s privacy.

So many conspiracy theories. You can know about it by listening to the huge quantity of info FCPS keeps pushing re opioids. So many newsletters, meetings and other parent education events.

When there are suicides, most parents don’t want the schools to tell the community. Some do. With drugs, I would suspect even more don’t want schools to say anything.

This obituary doesn’t say how the boy died. If the family didn’t want to give out the information, why do you think the school was allowed to?

Agree. Talk in healthy ways and to recognize and find solutions to a problem. When my HS classmate died, the school acknowledge it. People attended the services. Ditto when my cousin died at another school (drug and alcohol related) while we were both in HS. No wonder many kids today feel like no one at school cares. My son witnessed a student being wheeled out of school on a gurney. Many of the kids assume that was another drug related incident (don’t know about that one). No announcement about what happened to that kid. It seems pretty dystopian.

HIPPA applies to medical people not disclosing medical info. People have taken that as no one is allowed to discuss it, but that isn’t true. You can find ways to acknowledge an incident respectfully.

I’m a teacher and have had three students fatally overdose in the course of my career. The families never wanted the information to be made public. They were embarrassed and ashamed. One of the schools in our region had a serious problem with heroin 10-15 years ago, coincidentally when capacity reached close to 3,000 and it was too hard to monitor so many kids. Now other schools are at the same place except with fentanyl.

There were two weird sudden deaths at Robinson and centerville but it was in sleep so not sure they were OD.

I love you people - on the one hand, FCPS is a bungling, inept org that can’t do anything right but they’re also able to cover up all these student ODs and injuries.

Maybe they are trying to respect the family’s privacy. When (non-famous) people die, society normally relies on the family to share information.
