Drag Queen Story Hours

Do you also take them to KKK and Proud Boy events to educate them on hate? If not, then you are a hypocrite.

The point is my kids enjoy drag story hours and it makes it tangible to them when we talk about how folks want to take it away. That’s not the same thing as taking them to a KKK meeting…

I would also go to Retired Theater Kids Story Hour. I think they should make that a thing. At a minimum I wish the libraries would try harder to hook up with community theater groups more often.

Thanks for asking, OP, I’ve been wondering too. And thanks PP for the response! This sounds fun, I will look for one to take my kids to.

Not sure I see the fun of having to escort my kid through a parasol patrol hiding protesters and a police presence. I can find many other things to do with my kid on a weekend. Like to go a bookstore and read to them myself.

+1
No one has ever been able to explain the *value* of drag queen story hour. Ever.

As has been explained to you many times, the value added is the same as any other children’s performer, like the costumed princess i hired to sing at my daughter’s birthday.

The question was when did drag queens become socially acceptable to read books. Disney princesses have been around forever and there is a whole theme park based on it. Are you going to allow your child to dress as his/her favorite drag queen for Halloween?

No? The question was what is the *value* added by drag queens. And the answer is, the same value as any other performance for children. Drag queen story hour and children’s drag shows are no different than The Wiggles; men dressing up and entertaining children and making them laugh and smile and have fun.

And yes, of course, if he wanted to. Why wouldn’t I?

Well trained? Where exactly is that happening?

This. A drag performer isn't a great story teller simply by virtue of over-the-top costumes and makeup - which all detract from the story to begin with.

Have you ever been to a drag show? It’s much more than makeup and costumes. They’re performers.

Nope and never will. Not my thing. When exactly did they become performers?

Oh boy. I truly can’t with the stupidity.

How do you know they won’t enjoy KKK rallies if you never expose them. You are making decisions for them. Maybe they would like wearing a white sheet. You will never know unless you give them a chance. You have decided they like drag queens.

The readers are fun.

The vile bigots are not fun.

Do you….do you think they just stand there in costume and makeup? Drag always has been a performance.

I’m stupid. Where is the drag queen training program. Anybody can put on makeup and go read to kids but yeah I’m the stupid one. Are you doing background checks on these complete strangers that you are entrusting your kids with. Would you allow a random homeless guy come read to your kid?

How many performances did your parents take you to as a kid?

Typically drag story hours aren’t childcare. I’m there with my kid. If something unsettling happened we would leave. That has never happened in all the times I’ve gone though.

If there weren't protesters and a police presence, I'd take my kids because it's fun, and literacy is a great thing to promote, and I want my kids to grow up in a world that celebrates diversity.

If there are protesters and a police presence, then I'm still going to take them because I want my kids to grow up knowing we don't cave to terrorists, which is what someone spewing hate and intentionally scaring children is.

There are a great many volunteers who have read to my children at the library. I’m assuming the queens have the same vetting process, whatever it is.

I don’t care to convince you to take your child to drag queen story hour. Why do you care so much to convince me not to bring mine?

Have you never taken your kid to a performance? I didn't background check the puppeteer that came to the library, or the guy twisting balloons I took my kids to at the fair, why would this be different?

I stayed with my kids when they were story hour age. I background check people I leave my kid with, but not when I stay with them and we're in a public place.
