Country Music Songs to Get a Country Hater to Like Country

There is a ton of crossover country. I grew up on indie rock and I love Morgan Wade, she has a heavy southern accent but rock instramentation and indie rock themes-matches and metaphors and take me away are two great songs. I enjoy a lot of the suggestions by pp, but lets be real that they are trash pop country songs and I think someone who isn't into the genre would not be won over (looking at your walker hays and old dominion).

Missed the "upbeat/fun" so maybe not morgan wade Priscilla Block and Elle King (Tulsa or American Sweetheart) for fun petty party music. Kacee Musgraves maybe.

5 O'Clock Somewhere
Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)
Wagon Wheel
Cruise
When the Sun Goes Down
Boondocks
Pontoon
Chicken Fried

None

Have them listen to artists like:

Luke Combs
Parker McCollum
Maren Morris
Carrie Underwood

Also, some artists have a few songs with crossover appeal like Eric Church's "There's a beer in my hand."

I would have them try 70s country. I would have never thought I liked country, but I do enjoy singer songwriters and enjoy this playlist. (I am obviously of a certain age and those Kenny/Dolly songs must have seeped into my unconsciousness).

Anyone who can't enjoy Dolly's Two Doors Down has a heart of stone!

I love this song!

You need to show them country at its absolute best, virtuoso voices and gorgeous simple lyrics. Dolly, George Jones, Merle … if you want a more upbeat sound, outlaw country like Willie Nelson.

Agree with this poster! I know he’s twangy but I’d also add Hank Sr. Maybe Setting the Woods on Fire, Honky Tonk Blues, Hey Good Looking.

Some of these are not my faves (I’m the PP with the earlier litany of songs by women) but others that are in the same category…
Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off - Joe Nichols
Lots of Toby Keith - Wanna Talk About Me, Stays in Mexico, Should’ve Been a Cowboy. Red Solo Cup too but it’s terrible
Lots of Brad Paisley - Alcohol, American Saturday Night, I’m Still a Guy, Ticks (Whiskey Lullaby is amazing but a huge downer)
19 Something - Mark Wills
My Next Thirty Years - Tim McGraw

+1. And the Hootie and the Blowfish guy just seems like a huge grifter.

I think PP means One Margarita by Luke Bryan

Oh my GOD. Thank you for bringing this into my life. Anyone who can't be absolutely gut-wrenched by the line "I know it's a shame/But I'm giving you back your name" is simply not alive. And can we talk about how spot on the harmonies are? How unexpectedly real country? And the slow morph into a groovy 70s ending? Also this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zg-ivWxy5KE

Toby Keith is like the manifestation of the things people don't like about Country
