ya'll I love me some white bread. It's fluffy and airy, true. It's full of sugar, true. It disintegrates, true. But there's a reason why in medieval times (I think...don't quote me) they basically considered white bread to be the equivalent of cake. Because it's SO processed and sweet...but that's what makes it delicious!
It's an old fashioned toast indeed. White bread and butter. Classic. |
I make it! |
| 10/10 thread I loooooove toasted marble rye with lots of butter. |

How did this never cross my mind? This is one of the most genius - obvious but I didn't think of it things I've seen in a long time. My whole life, how many thousands of toast sides did I waste? (slinks away feeling grateful this forum is anonymous) |
| Irish butter on toasted brioche. My kid home from college had that for nearly 2 weeks. |

I love toast with butter! When I was a kid I loved staying in hotels because they used to serve perfectly toasted buttered white bread.
Of course I also adore white rice with ghee. Simple carbs are my simple pleasure. |
| Rye toast. Kerrygold butter or Normandy butter. Bonnie Maman jam. |
My husband's grilled cheese sandwiches are so good for this reason--he butters both sides of the bread! |
OP, I'm not familiar with that story about George Washington, but you might like a wonderful (fairly) recent biography of Washington by Alexis Coe, You Never Forget Your First. It's a modern spin and quite unlike most presidential biographies. |
| We started baking our own bread twice a week at the beginning of the month. It has completely smitten me with toast. Whether it’s butter, butter and jam, butter and honey, or cheese. It’s just so good. |
Now we’re talkin’. Couldn’t agree more. |
Local bakery (I don’t live in DC) and it is sour. I love it. |
————— Have all the toast lovers on this thread read the Mercy Watson (children’s) books by Kate DiCamillo? They are amazing books- and Mercy is the spirit animal of all toast lovers (I include myself). https://www.mercywatson.com/ |
