Schools are attended by kids from near and far. Teachers font usually luve directly in the zone. Admin and central office support is scattered. If it was 1 or 2 localized areas I would think they're open but this is effecting from silver spring to Gaithersburg. Too many effected.

Yes but not having power wouldn’t prevent teachers from going to work. It’s not like a blizzard where road conditions impact the ability to drive/bus to school.

Power outages do affect road conditions, though. There are not enough cops in the county to direct traffic at all the lights that won't be functioning. It will be a nightmare. We stupidly went out on the roads after the derecho when 75% of the lights were out and it took 2 hours to drive 3 miles.

This will be why schools are closed. It won’t be safe to run the buses if a significant portion of the traffic signals are out.

From WTOP

WMATA told WTOP that trains are bypassing Wheaton Station due to the plane crash and that. Metrorail service may be affected through tomorrow depending on rescue efforts and repair estimates. Shuttle bus service has been established and customers have been notified via social media and Metro Alerts.

Power outages continue throughout Montgomery County as a result of the crash. According to Pepco’s live outage map, over 80,000 customers across the utility’s service area are in the dark Sunday night, including much of Rockville and Gaithersburg.

Outages, including street and traffic lights, have been reported in the areas of Wheaton, Olney, Gaithersburg and as far away as Silver Spring. Drivers should remain alert for dark signals.

Dear MCPS Community,

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will continue to assess the impact of the power outage on school system operations. We will have an announcement later this evening. Currently, more than 44 schools and 6 central office facilities are without power, affecting several key services such as maintenance, buses and food services.

Should we flush batteries to get a closure?

(Don't flush batteries, people!)

The question then is how they define "widespread" and whether there will still be outages tomorrow morning.

85,000 outages represents about 25% of Pepco customers in MoCo.

That includes businesses.

Might as well. Gives an extra day for students and staff to figure out they have covid or the flu and not just allergies from spending Thanksgiving on a plane with a dog. Plus a lot of flights were delayed.

How could they have an announcement later this evening? I predict they will announce a closure prematurely tonight and the power will be on by 5 am. I expect nothing less.

why on earth would the number of delayed flight have any bearing on school closures???

The bus and food service involvement here mean that they will close the entire system if they close at all.
