Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
That seems likely, but if there are widespread traffic light outages, that could cause problems for buses. |
We’ll then those kids should find alternative transportation or be excused. |
|
I would guess some schools might be closed due to no power and not a whole system closure. Probably depends on what the rescue situation is and how much work Pepco needs to do to fix the grid after the plane and passengers are extracted from the lines. A lot can happen in the 8 hours until they have to make any calls.
What a wacky situation. |
Wow, there is literally no thread that is free from you folks who want to tell us how great your kids did in virtual schooling. |
I don't think you've been outside trying to navigate multiple traffic lights out tonight. It could be hazardous for buses in general and difficult for buses that go cross county. Plus bus routes would definitely be delayed. |

If the power outages are this widespread or worse by tomorrow morning, I don't see how they open schools.
It is no different than snow days. Different parts of the county are more affected than others, but a decision gets made for the whole county. Several schools are without power. Many faculty are without power. Traffic lights are down in areas making it unsafe to drive. |
lol that the number of staff without power would ever begin to play into the decision! good one!! —someone who has worked for mcps for a looooong time |

"Weather conditions or continuing impact from severe weather or other events such as a widespread power outage, may cause a delayed opening, early closing or closing for the day."

That makes no sense, even for MCPS, which rarely makes sense. They will kee schools open. Only individual schools that don’t have power will close. |
Why do you think this? I don't know what will happen, but I do liken it to a weather-related closure. In those circumstances many schools in the district are just fine and could open easily and others are not. They make a decision for the whole district... Does anybody have a sense of how many schools are currently without power? What percentage of the schools in the county? |
Sorry, was h clear. To be clear: the PP I responded to said that MCPS will offer virtual school for all. That makes no sense. People without power wouldn’t be able to attend virtual School. On top of that kids at schools with a cart model won’t have laptops. No way are they offering virtual tomorrow. My best guess is that they will have school and close individually affected schools (with no virtual for anyone). But they could do a systemwide closure if conditions are dangerous. I just don’t think virtual will be part of any decision. |
DP. When there have been power outages in the past, only the affected schools have been closed. |
Schools are attended by kids from near and far. Teachers font usually luve directly in the zone. Admin and central office support is scattered. If it was 1 or 2 localized areas I would think they're open but this is effecting from silver spring to Gaithersburg. Too many effected. |
