I think I replayed a few times.

But yes, I absolutely think it was deliberate.

I have to admit that the Aubrey Plaza character hit a little close to home re: "you don't watch the news, etc." I'm not nearly as uptight as she is, but I have often wondered if I could just care about the news/current events less and how that would feel.

I think this will be a good season.

Definitely deliberate! That guy was testing her/trying to establish power and get a rise.

I didn't love ep 1 as much as I loved last season but obv we're going to gobble each episode up.

+1. It was obviously a power move by that guy. I bet he pulls stunts like that with women at work all the time (hence his comment about employment lawsuits). I thought the husband's (Aubrey Plaza's husband - haven't learned their names yet) reaction was interesting. I couldn't tell if maybe he misunderstood what happened (like, thought that she was in the bathroom with the door closed, maybe?) or if he's just on his friend's side regardless. Per the previews, seems like he has a dark side waiting to come out so maybe it's the latter

Aubrey Plaza's husband seems like a total pushover who is constantly covering for his "alpha" buddy's bad antics. The scene where they try to order food is indicative of his lack of backbone; he's so whiny and submissive. It's a weird dynamic.

I haven’t finished the episode yet. Do we know how long it has been since the season 1 Hawaii storyline? I was struck by how comfortable Jennifer Coolidge’s husband is in his new wealth and how he treats her etc.

I would assume it matches the timing of the release of each season. Season 1 was filmed during the height of covid. So 2 years? Also I can't believe the sweet guy she met in season 1 is the same guy in season 2! Of course it's only been one episode but still....whoa.

Maybe he was always a con artist?

Also we found out this episode that she's worth half a billion dollars. That's......a lot.

Did the two guys sell the company together? Or is the other one separately rich (orange shirt guy)?
Sounds like they’re not really friends, just old college roommates.

Right! I’m curious where she got this money from? Maybe a dead husband somewhere?

I assumed she was an heiress.

This.

I never really bought his whole story about the fishing trip, but at the time I had no idea there would be a Season 2/recurring characters, so I never gave it much thought. But I also think his behavior is being deliberately played as a red flag so it's hard to tell.

Anonymous wrote:I love the dynamic between the two couples even though I think each of the four is a little terrible in their own way. As someone in that age group who is probably closest in position to Aubrey Plaza's character (lawyer, liberal, no rich), I am familiar with some of the conflict and mismatch you see there. It's absolutely true that people at a certain level of wealth are more distant from the issues of the world and can feel really shallow, even dumb, when you are really knowledgeable (especially if it's your job, as it is with Plaza's character). But also, that character *is* incredibly judgmental and tedious, and you can see that a lot of it is a reflex that is probably equal parts insecurity (feeling threatened by people with a lot more wealth and real world power than she has) and earned arrogance (I agree with her that bragging about being friends with Jeff Bezos is like a weird self own that would not make me like someone!).

I see a lot of potential for both conflict and friendship among those four, and I think the dynamic between the women, in particular, is going to be interesting. The thing about Daphne is that she's painted not as a snobby rich woman but as an incredibly big-hearted and socially skilled socialite-type. Like she defends Harper (Aubrey's character) to her husband and also does a lot of the heavy lifting with the conversation between the couples. She also clearly cares about her kids, enjoys her relationship with her husband, and just generally seems like a great, likable person, in contrast to Harper's sourness and judgment. BUT I've also known enough people like this IRL to know that at least 50% of this is just disciplined acting. Maybe more. Women like this know the role they play and how to play it, and are often incredibly sharp and insightful. I think depending on what happens with her husband (who I believe is going to turn out to be really terrible, all the signs are there) she could wind up being quite dangerous OR an incredible ally depending on who you are and how things shake out. I look forward to seeing how that unfolds.

I agree with most of this. I'm also a DC liberal lawyer in my 30s and felt pretty skewered by Aubrey Plaza's character - the news obsession, the view that the world is constantly ending, the judgment for people who don't care (or care less). I also know Daphne types and I agree that there's probably more to Daphne than meets the eye - at a minimum, it seems like she is aware that her husband engages in sexual bad behavior and tolerates it (suggested by her reaction to him following Aubrey upstairs and the discussion about employment lawsuits).

Anyway, like in the first season, the characters definitely capture (and skewer) certain nuances of UMC/UC society that you don't usually see reflected on-screen. I loved it and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season

I wondered if the wealthy douchy well endowed husband was planning to kill off his wife (Daphne?) but remembered the first 5-10 minutes of the show. He seems to be manipulative and untrustworthy from the get go. Why did they show the scene where he didn't want her to talk to their kid(s) again. The scene was put there for a reason. Also his radar went off loud and clear when the hookers came in. He probably has experience with them. They seem to be showing us he isn't the easy going good guy he tries to come off as. Aubry's character warns her husband about him buy my guess is that he is going to successfully manipulate/use her.

The subtext about “not watching the news” is that it’s a form of privilege. These wealthy white people can afford to not care about what’s happening in the world; they are protected by their wealth and skin tone. They were oblivious to the all the stressful stuff happening in the world that other couple alluded to.

Maybe.

More likely the half Asian couple is super liberal and religiously areas liberal mass media and believes all of the country and planet is going to hell in a hand basket because of non leftists.

So they are a typical leftist DC or San Fran couple, no kids, poo pooing everyone who doesn’t do or believe everything they do and believe. Read the same papers, vote in every local or whatever election, watch documentaries, etc.
#elite #privilege

This. The world has been a disaster from the beginning. Your typical snowflake liberal couple will truly think they are so smart and enlightened that they are able to better judge the world and everything going on.

Spot on.

And the other couple has kids, is always positive, doing fun stuff. But might be up to something! Esp if you believe the negative Debby downer liberal SF couple.

Looks like next episode has the girls do a day trip and the boys party and hook up with people. Set up? Letting loose?

As if Lotus I didn’t have the racially mixed overly drugged college girl sleeping around who convinced the nice wholesome Hawaiian cultural dancer to steal the euro-American White woman’s jewelry in the name of Hawaiian Island Social Justice Retribution!

No liberal snowflake there. She just got on her all-expenses paid vacation (from her pining lesbian college friend’s family) back to college without a second thought.

Seriously Lotus I had every issue in social current events possible. Even the apsie brother and gay FIL.

I just don't think we need to start calling everyone this or everyone that. There is a lot of social satire in this show, and skewering every group is its main purpose.
But I prefer this forum to not read like the politics forum, that is all.
