School gets out at 3:15. Why do you keep saying 4pm?? |
Probably because the thread title says MS, and MS gets out later + ECs. |
Hardy gets out at 3:30. OP talked about HA. We commute from Brookland. It is not an issue for us. Has never been 75 minutes. Never. May not work for everyone, but works for a lot of us and it’s temporary. We have been in our house 15 years. Moving would be far more disruptive than commuting for a few years. |
What do you mean, it's temporary? W3 MS feeder for 4-7 years, then 3 years of MS, then 4 years of HS don't feel temporary, and the public transit just isn't there for the kids to do it on their own, except Wilson. DC has a vision of drastically reducing the number of commutes by car - this is a big one. OOB students need school buses or a lot more attention paid to their commute to school, so that parents can get off the roads. |
| normally at least 40 minutes sometimes an hour to me seems pretty bad enough as it is |
You just described temporary. If you don’t want to do it, don’t do it. OP asked how we do it. For us, it’s fine. The alternative is far worse. |
|
The only way to commute from EOTP to Hardy/Deal zone is if one parent doesn’t work or works PT. Or have your kid take the bus/metro.
|
11 to 14 years, temporary. Got it. I understand your travel time claims now. |
That IS temporary. We will be in our house for at least 30 years. Commuting for a portion of that time is a way better choice than either moving or paying for private. If you don’t see that, I don’t know what to tell you, but you probably have bigger problems. |
It never cease to amaze me the way DCUM people rationalize things. |
It never ceases to amaze me how irrational DCUM people are. |
That 11 to 14 years is your children’s whole childhood. How can having them spend so much of their free time in a car be better than moving?! |
There will be a commute to school regardless of where we live. I would never move to suburbs. Work commute would be way worse (and for 25 years, not 9). Also we would have to drive EVERYWHERE else. This way we have a reasonable east-west route to school, our kid is happy, our house is paid for. We live on a single income and will retire early. |
I mean, if you don't value your time or having your kids live close to their classmates, then sure, way better choice? And as long as you are able to have one parent work PT or not at all. Easy peasy. |
So you have a SAHP. Got it. Most people don't want that. Also FYI, other places have these things called School Buses. Who am I to say that this isn't the right choice for you. But the point here is - it is not going to work for most people. |
