unfortunately, i can also confirm this :-/
A 40 minutes round-trip for drop off turns into 75 minutes round trip at pick up because afternoon traffic is so much worse.
I do this and it’s fine. Has NEVER been 75 minutes. Car time offers great bonding and conversation opportunities. It’s worth it to us. My kid loves their school and we are able to stay in the great house that works for us EOTP. It may not work for everyone, but it is entirely doable and far preferable to moving for us.
Oh round-trip at 4pm doesn't EVER take you 75 minutes? Either you missed the "round-trip" or "4pm" qualifiers, or you're thinking "Hearst to Mount Pleasant" when we're thinking "Key to Shaw".
Nope. We are doing NE to Hardy feeder. Has never taken 75 minutes (round trip). It usually takes 40, can take up to 60 but that is on a REALLY bad day. Have only been a couple of those.
Capitol Hill?
There is just no way you can get from CH to Hardy round trip in 40 minutes at 4pm rush hour. I’m north by H St and during the middle of the day with no traffic, it takes me 25-30 minutes to get to just Wisconsin Ave by M St. Even if you hop on 395, it’s still minimum 25 minutes. Good luck with doing that at 4pm because you can double that time. PP above needs to tell us exactly what neighborhood to Hardy or whatever school to be believable.
School gets out at 3:15. Why do you keep saying 4pm??
Probably because the thread title says MS, and MS gets out later + ECs.
Hardy gets out at 3:30. OP talked about HA. We commute from Brookland. It is not an issue for us. Has never been 75 minutes. Never. May not work for everyone, but works for a lot of us and it’s temporary. We have been in our house 15 years. Moving would be far more disruptive than commuting for a few years.
What do you mean, it's temporary? W3 MS feeder for 4-7 years, then 3 years of MS, then 4 years of HS don't feel temporary, and the public transit just isn't there for the kids to do it on their own, except Wilson. DC has a vision of drastically reducing the number of commutes by car - this is a big one. OOB students need school buses or a lot more attention paid to their commute to school, so that parents can get off the roads.
You just described temporary. If you don’t want to do it, don’t do it. OP asked how we do it. For us, it’s fine. The alternative is far worse.
11 to 14 years, temporary. Got it. I understand your travel time claims now.
That IS temporary. We will be in our house for at least 30 years. Commuting for a portion of that time is a way better choice than either moving or paying for private. If you don’t see that, I don’t know what to tell you, but you probably have bigger problems.
That 11 to 14 years is your children’s whole childhood. How can having them spend so much of their free time in a car be better than moving?!
